Dear Elizabeth: I think what you will find that sometimes the name did stay--but what you will find is that as smaller bits of land were sold out of the original tract the names changed as per the owner's desire. In many of the land records you will find where a tract is listed as being part of a larger tract of land called ---whatever--and so will give the name of the parcel that is part of the larger tract. Additionally, you will find that in a number of instances indviduals who made a number of land purchases --either purchasing bits of tracts or entire tracts would have them re-surveyed and the whole of the parts would be made into one large tract which they would give a new name to. I dont't know if all that is clear to you--but hope it helps <<<Neil>>> ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Thursday, June 15, 2006 4:28 PM Subject: [MDWICOMI] Re: Tract & Land Names > This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. > > Classification: Query > > Message Board URL: > > http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/wEB.2ACE/152.1 > > Message Board Post: > > I think the name generally stayed with the land. On page 191 of the book" Sketches of Maryland Eastern Shoremen, my great grand father William Calvin Mitchell is the owner of "Whitefield". The only home I ever was aware that he lived in was located on Pemerton Drive. I am trying to figure out how it or part of it got to be his property. Any further help would be appreciated.

In the case of Whitfield...you need to throw a bigger net....the tract was usually spelled Whitefield or White Feald, or who knows what other spellings.. It was already in existence in 1675 when it was referred to in the Som RR for that year. In 1716, Lazarus Maddux willed 700 Acres of Whitefield and White Feald, both spellings, to 2 of his sons in Somerset Co. Lazarus's mother was Eleanor White Maddux Boseman. I suspect the field was originally her father's. In 1763, Alexander Maddux ( one of many by that name) willed his share of Whitefield to 3 of his 5 sons, a 4th son was to have the part Alex's widow lived on , after her death. In the mid 1780's, three of the four inheritors of Whitefield sold out to their brother in law, Benjamin Hearne, and were soon gone to Georgia. Thus, you would expect to see Hezekiah Maddux and Benjamin Hearne with the bulk of Whitefield in , say, 1790. However, as a caution, the Maddux and Hearne families lived in that portion of Somerset that later became Worcester Co MD and then Sussex Co DE. So, be sure to look there. Maryellen

Rencher May 20, 1880 at the home of Sarah's parents in Trappe, Wicomico County, MD. They had no known children. Lemuel Taylor's second wife was Esther (L or S) Renshaw. They married August 24, 1882 in Chesterfield County, Virginia. I believe that both of his wives were the daughters of William Thomas Renshaw and Martha Ann nee Edwards. Lemuel and Esther had three daughters: Alifair (known as Fairy) Nellie P. and Georgia Belle. Fairy and her husband Larry are in the 1910 census of Trappe, Wicomico, MD with two sons: Roland, Gilbert, and her sister Belle. They are living next door to Fairy's uncle George W. Taylor. Her father Lemuel P. Taylor is listed above George in this census. In 1920, Fairy, Larry, the 2 sons and Bula (Beulah) are listed in the Salisbury, Wicomico, MD census. All I know about Roland is that he was born November 05, 1903 and died February 1974 in Maryland. Gilbert had a wife named Daisy. He was born February 05, 1905 and died September 28, 1967 in Maryland. No further information has been found on Nellie P. or Georgia Belle Taylor. I am interested in having contact with someone in this family so I can have current data in these branches of our family tree. Tina Ellis [email protected]

Hello All, I just scanned and indexed the first half of the 1897 book “Rehoboth By The River” and uploaded it to my web site. The book is mainly about the Presbyterian Church, but contains much about the history f the area which lies in Somerset Co., near the border of Wicomico Co. I hope everyone enjoys it. I plan to have the second half online in the near future along with many other old and rare books which I’ve recently been given access to scan index.
