Joan, Maryland did not tax occupations as Pennsylvania did. Among the possibilities for occupational info are wills, estate inventories (which may list equipment, materials and specialty tools sometimes), deeds and Court records -- did your man have to sue to recover a debt for a saddle sold? Did he appear as a witness or juror in a court suit where his occupation was given and you can tell from the context that he was your target person?
