Spangler is a name I recall seeing on this list. And so, when I chanced upon the item below while researching in another of my locations (Stark County, OH), I thought it might be of some value to post it here. Mike GEORGE H. SPANGLER is a wholesale and retail dealer in hats and gent's furnishing goods at Nos 12 and 14 South Market Street in Canton, where he has carried on business for a number of years. As he is widely and favorably known in the community, this is record of his life will undoubtedly prove of interest to many of our readers. Mr. Spangler was born on a farm in Stark County, January 5, 1845, and is a son of William A. and Elizabeth (Lind) Spangler. His parents were both born near Hagerstown, Md., and the father was a farmer by occupation. In 1835, he came with his family to this county and located upon a farm in Plain Township, where he engaged in agricultural pursuits for many years. His death occurred on the Old homestead in February, 1889, in the seventy-third year of his age. His wife passed away two years previous, dying in 1887, in her seventy-first year. The Spangler and Lind families were both of German descent and were established in Maryland at an early day. Source: http://www.heritagepursuit.com/Stark/Stark04P400.htm
Mike, Here's a bit more: Bartgis' Republican Gazette Aug. 5, 1801 "Stages - Phila, Lancaster, York, Hanover, Taney Town, Frederick and city of Wash - three times a week - William SCOTT, Samuel SPANGLER, Henry WINEMILLER, Frederick STUMP (schedule given). The Maryland Herald Sept. 11, 1807 "Mattias SPANGLER, about two miles below Mr. BRINN's Ironworks on Potomac river, has taken up two stray oxen." The Torchlight August 24, 1824 "Married at Carlisle Thurs evening, 12 inst, by Rev R. S. VINTON, Jacob SPANGLER to Mrs. Elizabeth WATERBERRY, all of Carlisle." From the marriage index for SPANGLER/SPENGLER There are 7 grooms beginning in 1804 and ending in 1859 and four brides. If anyone wants those marriages, let me know. There are no LIND entries in the marriage index. Lauren Brantner Mike Rohrer wrote: >Spangler is a name I recall seeing on this list.
