    3. Look at land records - follow the county evolution back - if they owned land they will show up. Anything that early (pre 1776) is in Frederick County or it's predecessor - wouldn't be Washington County. George Ely Russell has written a research guide for Frederick County published by Catoctin Press. I use his Washington County research guide all the time.
