I am seeking information on a Mary J. JACQUES that was born in Maryland. Possibly Washington Co., Maryland. Story has it that Mary J. JACQUES married John EVERHART. John EVERHART was born 24 Aug. 1791 in Middletown, Maryland. What I am trying to find is marriage informaiton on Mary J. JACQUES and her parents and sibblings plus birth of Mary J. JACQUES. If anyone can help me out it would greatly be appreciated.
There are only three grooms in the Washington County marriage index which covers 1799-1860. There are 9 brides with this surname. THOMBSON 2/28/1850 JACQUES, Arthur/Sr. LOWE 3/17/1812 Lancelot Jr./Mary BOWMAN 6/2/1812 Lancelot/Juliann GEHR 3/18/1846 From Family Bible Records in the Washington County Free Library, Hagerstown, MD there is one Mary Jacques in the Milliken Family Bible. She was born Wednesday 15 Feb. 1835 and her father is Lancelot and her mother Mary Jacques. As you can see there must have been two Lancelot Jacques. Maryland Advocate Nov. 10, 1827 "Died Mon 26th Oct last at his res near Hancock, Wash co.Md, Dr. Lancelot Jacques, aged about 72 years." The Torchlight November 8, 1827 "Died at his res near Hancock, in this co., after a short illness, on Monday morning 29th ult, Dr. Lancelot Jacques, aged about 72 years, native of England, emigrated to this country early in life; educated at New Ark School. He served a short time as a surgeon in the American army during the Rev war and three times elected to the legislature of MD; also filled several other public situations." The Torchlight March 25, 1830 "Married same day [Thurs last] by Rev. John Winter, George I. Brewer to Miss Elizabeth, dau of Lancelot Jacques Esq all of this co." In 1801 Denton Jacques is listed as owing taxes in Allegany County and he frequently is listed as having letters at the Hagerstown Post Office. There are references to Jacques' Iron Works, Jacques' Forge and Jacques' Furnace. Mail is directed to people who are working there and it is reference to where people lived "near Jacques' Forge". Frederick Town Herald Nov. 22, 1806 "Undivided moiety of 2000 a for sale now in the possession of Denton Jacques to be sold at hs. of Daniel Harbine at the Big Spring nr the premises, in pursuance of chancellor of Md, in Wash co; Mr. D. Jacques living at the furnace will show the land - Lancelot Jacques, Trustee, Wash co Hagerstown Gazette Oct. 6, 1812 [contains a description which may help you find the iron works location] "Sale of land in the neighborhood of John Mason, Esq. and Jacques iron works, called the Resurvey on Pipe Tomahawk...." Lancelot Jacques sold a farm on the Potomac two miles from Hancock Town in 1799. In 1803 he was Justice of the Peace. In 1807 Ann and Lancelot Jacques are adm. of Joseph Hurst. Also be aware that there is an alternative spelling JACKES. Widow and one heir. Lancelot was an administrator for William Blackmore and Daniel Miller. He also received a portion of Eve Dick's estate for use of Margaret Gower's heirs.
