I hear you - I have a Schmidt/Smith line I'm holding in reserve too. I have the marriage license index for Frederick Co from 1778-1810 and there are no Denny entries there during that period. Washington Co. was carved out of Frederick County in 1776. There is a 1776 census of Frederick Co. I do not have anywhere close to all the source materials for Washington County - I am sort of in a certain time frame for when my husband's ancestors were there in the resources I own. You might check Scharf's History of Western MD and Williams' History of Washington County - those are both good places to look. It doesn't hurt to check MD/WV/PA counties around Washington County. All the information on James Denny puts him in PA Greene county and Fayette, except that his oldest son was supposed to be born in Hagerstown, MD in 1782. My guess was that Sarah was living with her parents as James was fighting on the frontier during the Revolutionary War and I haven't been able to find them in PA at that time. I had hoped maybe she was mentioned in a will when the parents died or maybe in church records. I also was looking at Frederick Co., MD. Isn't it very close to Washington County?
