Maryland archives has not posted the death index which will include 1971 for the counties. When they finally get it up and running you might find him there. If he died before 1944 you might still find him on the index. You have to search five cards at a time in certain time periods. The cards are in alphabetical order. But it is well worth the effort, I have found about seven or eight of my ancestors on the files. Baltimore City is separate and does include up to and including 1972.
