Linda writes: George Steorts (versions of the name include Stots, Stotz, Sturtz, Storts, etc.) was born according to the 1850 census in Hagerstown, MD in 1769. The 1850 US Census states he was born in "Md.", not "in Hagerstown." There are indeed occasional local 1850 enumerations that give a County of birth, but this is not one of them (for Lewis County, (West) Virginia, which was set off from Harrison and Randolph Counties in 1816).
