This was interesting to me for two very different reasons. I lived in Taneytown for a short two years many years ago but before I was old enough to appreciate the area. Now deeply interested in my family history, I have a brick wall that involves the area. George Steorts (versions of the name include Stots, Stotz, Sturtz, Storts, etc.) was born according to the 1850 census in Hagerstown, MD in 1769. The only history we have comes from notes written down in 1907 while George's son was still living. They say that George's father came from Germany, "fought under Washington, that at one time, after Penn made a treaty with the Indians, the family located near Gettysburg, later came across Braddock's Old Road to the Morgantown area." Does anyone know of this man? Lutheran Church records of the Lower Bermudian Congregation: (Near Gettysburg.) February 28, 1768 Sunday Reminiscare: Johann STOTZ. August 14, 1768: Confirmed: Joh. Georg STOTS George Storts / Steorts / Stots 1769 - 1851 bought land in Harrison County, (W)VA in 1817. I have not been able to find him before then. He would have been about 48, old enough to have had a grown family by then. I have not found him or his father. Possibly his father died in the Revolutionary War without leaving a record as so many did, especially if taken prisoner and put on the British prison ships. Would appreciate it if anyone doing research in the area would keep this search in mind. Many thanks. Linda [email protected]_ (mailto:[email protected]) In a message dated 8/14/2011 10:13:59 A.M. I take a old indian trail across country and end up in Reistertown, Md. where I get on to route 140 which runs thru Westminister, Taneytown, Emmittsburg and connects with route 16 (Pa) in Adams Co., Pa.. This trip is about 85 miles and I make it several times during the Summer months. Two of my uncles in the early 1800's married the two daughters of the Emmitts, so I enjoy driveing thru the old towns and staying off of !-70 thus Hagerstown which would actually be out of my way.
