Lauren and Beth, Fulton County (PA) Historical Society has a searchable database of known grave sites within the county at: http://www.fultonhistory.org/deceasedincemeteries.php This database includes the Tonoloway Baptist Church Cemetery which is just a few miles north of Hancock, Md. The search screen has deteriorated recently, and lost it's labels. Here are some hints in using the db. After you choose SEARCH, the input screen comes up with seven input boxes for the various columns of the db. The input box on the top line is for name. You can type in full name, last name, first name, a few letters of a name. The search engine will find whatever you type. The input box on the second line is for the burial place. Since many of the records in the database are from obituaries, (identified with an * after the name), there and be variations of the spelling of the cemetery. For Tonoloway Baptist Church, just type tono. You will get everyone buried there. The third box is for DOB or DOD. Since there is not consistency in the format, I usually only search for the year. The fourth box is for Spouse. Again, full name, last name only, first name only, be creative. The fifth box is for parents (looking for a maiden name?) and the sixth box is for military service. Be sure to tap the clear button at the bottom of the search screen, as the search engine sometimes retains inputted data. Also you can refine you search by putting search criteria in multiple fields. Want to see just the Stillwells buried in the Tonoloway Baptist Church Graveyard; put stil in the top (name) field and tono in the second (Cemetery) field. this will give you a list of all of the Stillwells buried at Tonoloway. One last trick for using the Fulton County Historical Society's grave site database. Searches are not always in alphabetical order. When you go the the opening screen with the 8 columns, click on the up arrow in the names column; this alphabetizes the column. This is needed because names are constantly being added to this database, and new addees go at the end of the file. There are 7 grooms with the surname GRAVES: Joseph, Augustus, Silas, George, John T., Denton T. and Chas. E. [Too many court house fires destroyed earlier records] When I checked the Graves burials in the Hancock District [Morrow & Morrow Vol. II Washington County Cemetery Records], there are some in the Presbyterian Church Graveyard on High Street [Hancock]. In the Tonoloway Baptist Church Graveyard there are these entries: Four Stillwell graves followed by: GRAVES, Joseph Sr. age 67y 7m, d 7 June 1831 GRAVES, Elizabeth, w/o Joseph GRAVES Sr. age 48y d 15 May 1826 I checked Kanely's Directory of Maryland Church Records and didn't find any information on Tonoloway Baptist Church. I didn't find anything in Passano's Source Records of Maryland in the church section. The book that was suggested might be your best bet. I don't know if there is a Baptist Church Archives - that might be worth looking for. Sometimes records went from defunct churches back to their archives. Let me know if you want more of the entries on Stillwell or any of the Graves entries from the marriage index. [There are 3 Stillwell grooms also.] Lauren Brantner --- On Mon, 7/7/08, Beth <[email protected]> wrote: From: Beth <[email protected]> Subject: [MDWashin] MARRIAGE IN HANCOCK To: "Washington Co. Maryland List" <[email protected]> Date: Monday, July 7, 2008, 12:46 AM Hello, I am new to the list. I am looking for a marriage of Joseph Graves and Elizabeth Stillwell that was said to have occurred in Hancock in 1798. Who can tell me what church records there might be for Hancock in 1798? They later were in Bedford County, Pennsylvania. Thanks for any help you can give.
