    3. Bobby~       How far back does that Lutheran Church go??  If it falls within or about your time-line, they may have some pertinent records in their archives.  If they are not kept at that church, you could ask them where sacramental records for that period might be found.       Could find very little data on Green Spring Furnace.  Found the Rangers at the Heritage place in Cumberland, former railroad station quite helpful on occasion.  However, that was also, because my husband's great grandfather had a barge on the C&O Canal.  A daughter, age 12 drowned at Four Lock on the Canal in 1868.  There was quite a community there at that time.  Looking at a map, Green Spring Furnace, was directly up the road, a few miles from the Lock.        Have family visiting now from VA but originally from Frostburg, I will ask them at dinner this evening if  they have any thoughts on Green Spring Furnace and get back to you.        Oh, yes.  I found a John HUNT who applied for Naturalization in the very early 1800s, would this an ancestor?? 3. Hi Mary Ellen, I also have that Naturalization for John Hunt. But I can't prove that he was my 4th great grandfather. However, he does show up in the 1800 Census for Washington County and he is the only John Hunt listed, so it is a good possibility. He did however, have children that were born before 1800. There is a bigger puzzle, as I can not find any marriage record for him. On the 1850 Census, his wife Susan was living with one of her son's David Hunt, and it says she was born in PA. >From what I understand the records were destroyed by a fire. It was St Peter's Evangelical Luthern Church. John Hunt & his wife are both buried in the Church graveyard. This is a never ending quest!! I can trace the family forward, but this problem just drives me crazy!! Thanks again for all of your help & suggestions. 3. The "mystery" is element which makes genealogy so interesting!!!   My husband's g grandfather John E. CHAMBERS is such a mystery.  We have his marriage record (sacramental) in County Waterford for 1836.  His naturalization record for Washington County.  We have his grave in the small churchyard behind St. Michael's Catholic Church in Clearspring.  Some legal documents in Washington County.  His son Michael wrote a tribute in the Mining News upon the death of his mother in 1899 which gave the familiy's emigration story.  All of it we have proved was true with the exception of where he was born in County Waterford.  Pre 1864 records are very iffy and usually sacramental.  That is, unless the ancestor was a criminal or in some way distressed the English.  However, there is nothing on John.  In MD, since his death was 1871, there is no COD.  We have the grave and stone.  He is one of our genealogy mysteries. Good luck to you in your quest. 3. There might be answers yet. I heard through a friend who does a lot of Irish research that Catholic Church records are now being put on the internet. So far I know only that Co Cork is available, but if Waterford follows perhaps you can find a baptismal record. 3. Here is a bit from the newspaper extractions: Maryland Chronicle February 15, 1786 "William Beatty, at his encampment, 2 miles below the Green Spring Furnace, commonly called Jacques's Furnace, offers reward for stolen stallion." Maryland Herald Feb. 2, 1803 "Jacob Zeller, near the Green Springs Furnace, offers reward for missing heifer." Maryland Herald August 8, 1804 "Land for sale two miles below the Green Springs Furnace at subscriber's house, on the road to Cumberland, Wash Co 130 ac where he now resides - Henry Otto." >From Maryland, a New Guide to the Old Line State (pub. in 1999) p. 584 "Md. 56 crosses Green Spring Run just past McCoy's Ferry Rd. Upstream, note the ruins of Green Spring Furnace. Lancelot Jacques and Thomas Johnson obtained this site in 1768 for a forge mill and 'Iron Work for running of Pigg Iron'. Johnson became state governor in 1775; Jacques manufactured cannon for the Continental Army. Md. 56 then passes Fort Frederick State Park before intersecting I-70, goes by Big Pool, a small lake built for the C & O Canal and now a poopular fishing spot."
