Don Don, That's the $64,000 question! Copyright 1977, second printing 1992, the book is a bit outdated. But the introduction reads: "Washington County, located in the Hagerstown Valley (south of the Cumberland Valley in Pennsylvania and north of Shenandoah Valley in Virginia), was the hub of migration for many early pioneers heading south to Virginia and Kentucky or west to Ohio and the plains states. This book was taken from the document titled "Index to Decedant Estates (1776-1890)," housed in the Clerk's Office of the courthouse in Hagerstown, Maryland. The original books containing wills are now located in the Hall of Records in Annapolis, Maryland. Copies of the originals are in the courthouse at Hagerstown and can be copied for 50 cents per page by writing to: Registrar of Wills Washington County Courthouse Hagerstown, MD 21740 Earlier supporting documents are in the Hall of Records in Annapolis and there are no copies available in Washington County. Listed below are the supporting documents which are available and the dates: 1.) Minutes of Proceedings - Orphans Court from 1806 to the present. 2.) Guardian Account from 1852 to the present. 3.) Docket of Proceedings from 1852 to the present. 4.) Executors and Administrators Bonds from 1856 to the present. 5.) Executors and Administrators Accounts from 1852 to the present. 6.) List of Sales from 1853 to the present..." Relatively speaking, Laura Do we have ancestors in common? Check here http://livinginthepastlane.com
This book is not outdated because it covers a specific time period - it just gets older - kind of how I would like to view myself (smile). Morrow and Morrow have published a similar guide to Jefferson County, WV where you will also find many Wash co. names. Good point (chuckling as I too am becoming outdated)! What I meant to say is that the process explained in the intro may no longer be up to date. :o) Relatively speaking, Laura Do we have ancestors in common?
