Gordon I'm interested in the Prathers from a historical perspective: How Prather's Neck ( a loop of the Potomac River near Clear Spring) got its name. If you have any info on the earliest Prathers in that area, I'd appreciate it. Thanks Tim Snyder > From: [email protected] > To: [email protected] > Date: Fri, 24 Aug 2012 08:03:24 -0400 > Subject: [MDWashin] Prather > > Quite sometime ago some one was looking for the Prather family in Maryland and I responded with info on the Pennsylvania Prather's to which I am distantly related to. I have recently obtained info on the Prathers in Washington Co., Md. around Clear Springs. If the person who was looking for the Prather's contacts me I will give them the info obtained. > > Gordon crooks > > > ********* > Visit the threaded archives of this list: http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index/MDWASHIN > ********* > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to [email protected] with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message

Tim, Passano's Source Records of Maryland has about a 4 inch block of Prather listings - they include the DAR lineage book V. 5, p. 429,the Abrev. Compendium of Amer. Geneal. Virkus, V. 4 P. 457, Records in Frederick Co, Records in Beltsville of a private burying ground. Nat. Genal Soc. Quarterly V. 9 No. 3. p 39, Prather Family DAR Mag. March 1939, v. 73 no. 3, p. 87; an article about Thomas Prather's Rev. War Pension, Nat. Genal. Soc Quart. September 1938, v. 225, no.3, p. 45. Other family names with Prather intries include Summerfield Baldwin, Monnet family, and Mullikins. Rice's This Was the Life, Excerpts from the Judgement Records of Frederick Co. Md. 1748 - 1765 has many Prather entries - most for Thomas. He was one of the "gentlemen" who served as a Justice of the Court in 1848. Aaron Prather served on the Grand Jury for this first court. Neither of the Prathers qualified themselves as attorneys Before the Court. Thomas served the court until 1775. A John Smith Prather also served the court. Brumbaugh's Colonial Records also has entries including All Saints Parish in Frederick Co. - Prather Thomas and Elizabeth - daughter Elizabeth B. January 10,, 1742/3. Both of these volumes reference other locations in Maryland and quite a few entries to look at. Morrow and Morrow has a Wash. Co. Estate Account for a Thomas Prather, 1787 and Richard Prather 1794. There are 17 Prather entries in the Will index. The Thomas in 1785, Louis in 1833, Jon. D. in 1879, Elizabeth in 1848, Richard in 1789 and Basil in 1808 have wills - the other entries are for other estate documents. Looks like you have many places to look if you haven't already! I'm sure there is more in Fred Co. but I don't have recources there for a lookup. Check the county evolution dates and you probably will go back to earlier counties. Frederick was formed from Prince George's in 1748 - when the records for the Rice Volume began. Prince Georges was formed from Calvert and Charles in 1695. Washington County formed from Frederick in 1776.
