Excerpt from obituary for George Washington Hahn, noted on Find-A-Grave, mentions land belonging to George's grandfather William Nichols, called "Nicholas Contrivance, resurveyed in 1964. This place called Rattlesnake Springs is described in "Colonial Records of the Upper Potomac Vol. 2 by William H. Rice, 2012" In this book it says: "Also on that day (23 Oct 1739) Dent survey 75 acres called "Nicholls Contrivance" for Edward Nicholls near Rattlesnake Spring about two miles from where NEALS FRIEND lived between Antietam Creek and the Conococheague (Ibid., Patented Certificate #1563) Since Neals (Nicholas) Friend was my 6th great grandfather I am interested in pinpointing this location. Does Rattlesnake Spring appear on any modern maps? Patty Friend Thompson
Pat: I am familar with this area to some extent, my ancestral farm is on the West branch of Antietam Creek, just outside of Waynesboro, Pa. and the West branch of the Conocoheague is near Upton, Pa. Both of these cross the border into Washington Co., Md. Antietam Creek would be to the east of Hagerstown and Conocoheague Creek would be to the West of Hagerstown, so the area you are talking about is about 15 miles wide in Maryland. I do know for a fact that the Conocoheague does enter into the Potatomic River and that would be near Williamsport, Md. In the area near and around Williamsport are three known Springs, Clear Spring, Indian Spring , Big Spring and the general area is known as Indian Springs Management Area (State forest and mountain land). It would seem to me this is the area you are looking for. Both in Maryland and Pennsylvania these areas are well watered with numberous springs in both states. you might want to check Maryland Hall of Records and see what they have on the subject.
