Ah ha! I knew if I announced publicly that I couldn't find something, I would remember where I put it. Several months ago I joined the Ohio Genealogical Society and took advantage of their members-only access to Newspaper Archives. A short time later, NA changed their subscription policy and OGS no longer had access. I'll have to visit my local library and see if they have a subscription. (Or break down and subscribe myself!) Color me embarrassed, but I'm hoping someone on the list can help. I saved copies of four articles mentioning my Clark/Clarke ancestors from the Mail, but I neglected to cite where online I found them. I need to view them again and can't find them. This time period isn't on Ancestry and I couldn't find it on the Washington County Free Library site. Does anyone have an idea where online The Hagerstown Mail is available? Hello Washington County Listers I'm new to the Washington List. I need help with one of my Brick Walls: I need the parents, etc of my GGG-Grandmother, Lenor Mower/Maurer. Her parents, Michael and Mary Elizabeth (Manley) Mower/Maurer were married on 14 October 1813 in St John's Luthern Church in Hagerstown, Washington County, MD. Her eldest brother, John was christened in St John's in October 1815. The family is living in Highland Twp., Muskingum Co., OH in the 1820 US Census. Michael was listed as being over 45 years old in 1820, therefore he would of been born before 1775. Michael died in 1823. Mary lived until 1863 and listed her birthplace as MD in the 1850 and 1860 US Censuses. Her tombstone gives her birthyear as 1786, thus an eleven year age gap between Mary and Michael. She may of been a second wife. Any and all information and/or ideas or suggestions will be appreciated. Thank You, Bob Todd
SAVE THIS DATE---Frederick County Genealogical Meeting, Saturday April 9, 2011 1pm Homewood at Crumland Farm Visit www.frecogs.com for directions. Refreshments served. Visitors welcome A very special presentation by one of FRECOGS’ favorite speakers. Civil War is about to begin and Maryland is right in the middle. Some of our ancestors were pro-union and some were pro-confederate. Sometimes it was in the same family; brother against brother. On April 12, 2011, the civil war beginning will be reaching its sesquicentennial. Over the next four years many anniversaries of important events during the civil war will be occurring. The Antietam Battle is still the event where in one day the most people died on American soil. THE ANTIETAM BATTLE AND THE MANY FALLEN SOLDIERS-- Speaker: John Nelson of Hagerstown will speak on the Antietam Battle and hunt for the names of all the fallen soldiers and their burial locations. Called the "Bloodiest One Day Battle in American History", 23,000 soldiers were killed, wounded or missing after twelve hours of savage combat on September 17, 1862. The Battle of Antietam ended the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia’s first invasion into the North and led to Abraham Lincoln’s issuance of the preliminary Emancipation Proclamation. TIMELINE: November 6, 1860 - Abraham Lincoln, who had declared "Government cannot endure permanently half slave, half free..." is elected president, the first Republican, receiving 180 of 303 possible electoral votes and 40 percent of the popular vote December 20, 1860 - South Carolina secedes from the Union followed within two months by Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana and Texas. February 9, 1861 - The Confederate States of America is formed with Jefferson Davis, a West Point graduate and former U.S. Army officer, as president April 12, 1861 - At 4:30 a.m. Confederates under Gen. Pierre Beauregard open fire with 50 cannons upon Fort Sumter in Charleston, South Carolina. THE CIVIL WAR BEGINS. April 17, 1861 - Virginia secedes from the Union, followed within five weeks by Arkansas, Tennessee, and North Carolina, thus forming an eleven state Confederacy with a population of 9 million, including nearly 4 million slaves. The Union will soon have 21 states and a population of over 20 million September 17, 1862 - The bloodiest day in U.S. military history as Gen. Robert E. Lee and the Confederate Armies are stopped at Antietam in Maryland by McClellan and numerically superior Union forces. By nightfall 23,000 men are dead, wounded, or missing. Lee then withdraws to Virginia. Confederate dead lay by the fence bordering Farmer Miller's 40 acre Cornfield at Antietam where the intense rifle and artillery fire cut every corn stalk to the ground "as closely as could have been done with a knife." September 22, 1862 - Preliminary Emancipation Proclamation freeing slaves issued by President Lincoln. Many thanks to Pastor Michael K Louia who sent me a photocopy of the page on which my ancestor's funeral is listed. In his letter, the pastor referred to information in the old church books as "sparce" and "cryptic". Although the results were disappointing, Pastor's efforts are very much appreciated. Hello Jean, I noticed that you are researching Magruders and I have a brick wall with mine. If I could just find her parents I could take it back. Her name is Martha Magruder. She was born about1788 and married December 24, 1811in Montgomery Co., MD to John H. Willett. She appears to have died sometime before the 1850 census. She is my Magruder brick wall. They lived near Damascus, Clarksburg Township in Montbomery Co., MD. One daughter, Mary Ann Willett, is mentioned in St. Paul's Rock Creek Church records, my Roger Nelson WIllett has baptism records at St. Bartholomew's Episcopal (1817) as does his brother John Alexander WIllett (1820). Per census there is an unnamed daughter born 1820-1825, and lastly a daughter Susan born about 1828. There were a number several Magruder families living in Montgomery County with possible daughters that might be Margaret depending on the accuracy of her birth.. Other Magruder families I have ruled out. Possibilies include Edward Magruder, Elnor, Ninian, Samuel B., William B., Enrich/Enock?), Jeffrey, Joseph, Nathaniel of N), Zadock, Levin, and Walter. No one else seems to have her. I would appreciate hearing from you if you have any information on insights into my Martha Magruder. Wish I could attend this function...it sounds wonderful, Shirley Edillon ---- [email protected] wrote: ============= Frederick County Genealogical Society Meeting, Saturday March 12, 2011 1pm Homewood at Crumland Farm.
