Bobby~ How far back does that Lutheran Church go?? If it falls within or about your time-line, they may have some pertinent records in their archives. If they are not kept at that church, you could ask them where sacramental records for that period might be found. Could find very little data on Green Spring Furnace. Found the Rangers at the Heritage place in Cumberland, former railroad station quite helpful on occasion. However, that was also, because my husband's great grandfather had a barge on the C&O Canal. A daughter, age 12 drowned at Four Lock on the Canal in 1868. There was quite a community there at that time. Looking at a map, Green Spring Furnace, was directly up the road, a few miles from the Lock. Have family visiting now from VA but originally from Frostburg, I will ask them at dinner this evening if they have any thoughts on Green Spring Furnace and get back to you. Oh, yes. I found a John HUNT who applied for Naturalization in the very early 1800s, would this an ancestor?? Mary Ellen Chambers Lakewood, OH
Mary Ellen, I doubt they were Catholic. My 4th great grandfather was a Trustee of St Peters Evangelical Luthern church...so I'm assuming all the children were Lutheran also. Are they any county history about Green spring Furnace?? There are HUNTS listed in book for St. Mary Hagerstown but the Baptisms are for 1849/1850, too late for your ancestor. Fr. GLICK stated to us in a 1994 letter that the sacramental archives for St. Michael/Clearspring, St. Thomas at Moorsville on Old Catholic Church Rd., St. Patrick's at Little Orleans are all together at St. Augustine in Williamsport, MD If your ancestor was Catholic, this might be a way to maybe find the info you are seeking. Any record previous would most likely be a sacramental record for Baptism. If you are lucky, the mother's maiden might be on it. You could try the 1880 census which would have your 4th great aunt listed a child of------, which would have the father listed as head of family. This could give you an idea of their marriage year. You could then contact the church of their chosen denomination which existed at that time for a record of the marriage. That would have her maiden name one it. I assume she had no siblings, male or female who did not marry for the surname to be known. For a civil death certificate post 1898, I have just gone to the web site for MD Archives. Followed the instructions, paid the fee, and had it within a few weeks for several of our family who expired in the early 20th century. Within a few months ago, someone emailed either the Genealogy Guys podcast or the Genealogy Gems podcast with a similar question. There was a guest who had some ideas about how to gather that information without using a death certificate. Two of his suggestions were to use the social security death index and then send for a person's application which would have listed a mother's maiden name. This will work only if she is of an age that she'd have had a social security application. If she was and the information isn't yet there, I also recently learned that social security records are still being added! I'd thought they were all there, but apparently records continue to be added from earlier years. Another idea was to look in a probate file. If your 4th great aunt had an estate record, death certificates are sometimes filed in those probate records.
