    1. Property sale by John Peter HERR and wife
    2. Can anyone assist me with details of a record of sale of property in Hagerstown ca. 1825 by John Peter HERR and his wife who reportedly lived in Ohio? I'm interested in identifying where in Ohio they might have lived at that time. He would have been about 70 years old in 1825. John M. Rhodes

    1. Seeking origins of John Stam near Hagerstown
    2. Michael Stamm
    3. Here's what limited data I have: Family lore: John Stam was born on 13 Oct 1823 in Hagerstown, MD His father was one of two brothers who came to America. Known facts: 1850, 1870, 1880, & 1900 censuses list his state of birth as MD. He was a stone mason. 1860 census lists his date of birth as VA. In 1850 census, John Stam is living in Wayne County, Ohio with the family of Jacob Stam (born circa 1819 in MD) and Jacob's wife Mary (born circa 1822 in PA). It's likely that Jacob was a relative, even an older brother. Death certificate of John Stam (signed by his son) Parents Joseph Stamm and M. Shanes (or Shones--handwriting is not good). Parents born in Germany (supported by census data). John Stam's only sons were named (in order) David Franklin Stam; Orville Vincent Stam; and Eugene Stam. No naming pattern to known fathers of either John or his wife. Other: One source states John may be the brother of his ancestor Jacob. Jacob had brothers Daniel and John, and a sister Susan. However, his Jacob Stam's father was Jacob Stam (Senior). Stam surnames are found in Washington County, and Franklin County, PA. However, none have fit, even though some went to or near Wayne County, OH prior to 1850. Stam is also found in Lancaster and Berks Counties, PA in the 1700's. I have seen the Washington County courthouse indexes/indices, and no appropriate Stam connection was found. A friend, a professional genealogist, researched Stam in Franklin County and found no connection. LDS microfilms for Reformed and Lutheran churches were examined, and no connection found. Census indexes/indices for Maryland, Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Indiana have been checed. No appropriate Joseph or Jacob Stam references have been found. Hypothesis: Family lore has not been accurate, but has always had some relationship to the truth (stories being garbled over the years). Joseph and his brother arrived in America, didn't own land, stayed with relatives already here, and probably arrived after the War of 1812, either in Baltimore or Philadelphia. Anybody have any suggestions for research? Thank you, Michael Stamm

    3. Fred, George Ely Russell's Guide to Research in Washington County MD indicates that there is a 17 page typescript of Births and Baptisms of St. Paul's Lutheran and Reformed Church near Clearsping, 1788-1801. It is not clear where that typescript is. The Records of the Funstown Reformed Church 1852-1900 is also a typescript from 1951 and it is in the Washington County Historical Society Library. Salem German Reformed Church Births and Christenings 1771-1783. are available on microfilm mf 1415-2, 100012748, [LDS family history centers], Cearfoss Pike Records, 1787-1823 from Maryland State Archives mf M 859. There is also a typescript of some of their records in Washington County Historical Society Library. Having said all that, I don't know if any of these have been published in the Maryland Church Records series. Perhaps some of the other listers who have those volumes can help you. 3. Fred...The record and it is the original, is in the basement office. Talk to the minister and she should ok you looking at it when the secretary is available(one day a week). It is available in other records printed by someone. My point was the person who translated it made many mistakes and that was just on my line. The early part is in German and one third through it changes to English. You can is the errors. I say translator but it is really knowing how to read the early German hand writing. I added one generation more by looking at the records myself. tom -----Original Message----- From: Fred Conley [mailto:fconley@atlanticbb.net] Sent: Friday, July 23, 2004 9:39 PM To: MDWASHIN-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [MDWASHIN] St. Peter's Church Register Would any folks happen to know about a church register for St. Peter's Church in Clear Spring? 1. Jacob Mills patenting land in 1749
    2. Genealogy Researcher
    3. This may not be of interest to many of you, but I thought that I would share it anyhow. I have seen posts on these boards claiming that a Jacob Mills patented land in Washington County in 1749 (which actually would have been Frederick County at that time) and if I'm not mistaken, one post even claimed that he was the first settler in Washington County. Anyway, I e-mailed the MD historical society with regard to this possible patent and below is the e-mail I received back. If you have info on this please e-mail me. I'm at a point in my research now where I need PROOF of this. Any help would be appreciated since there is no way that I can possibly get to the archives in annapolis. I apologize for the cross-post. Thank you, Tracy Dear Mrs. Mills, I briefly looked through some of our records on Washington County (Frederick County before 1776), and I could find no mention of a Jacob Mills. This search included abstracts of land records for 1749. You might wish to visit the Maryland State Archives in Annapolis. They would have the original land records, as well as other county records. They also a card file index to land certificates and patents, where you could look up Jacob Mills to see if he owned land in any other counties.

    1. Robert HIGGINS in Washington Co. early 1800's
    2. Joseph J. Messersmith, Jr.
    3. I am seeking information on Robert Higgins who appeared on the 1790 and 1800 censuses in Washington Co. Based on the number of people, sex and ages residing in his household these years, I believe this is the same Robert Higgins who was on the 1810 census in Rockingham Co., VA, and from whom I descend. I am looking for any information that may be available on him and his family while residing in Washington Co. Specifically, are there tax lists from the period 1780 through about 1810 that were prepared each year? In VA, personal property and real estate tax lists were prepared each year during this time period. Thanks in advance for your help. Jim Messersmith Rockville, VA
