Roger, there is a marriage for a Geo. W. Mitchell to Cornelia D. Baldwin 11/29/1833 but no Samuels. An Alexander, William H. and F. Dorsey are in marriage records. From a Torchlight entry Alexander was married to Amelia Carr dau of Col. John Carr. In 1827 her sister Mrs. Nancy Stewart, wife of Associate Reformed Church Pastor Rev. George Stewart died at their residence near Hagerstown. There is also an entry in the Torchlight Mar. 27, 1821, "Married 1st inst. by Rev. R. Finnell, Alexander Finnell, to Mrs. Catharine Mitchell, relect of J. Mitchell, decd. and dau of Samuel Hanson, Esq. formerly of Md., but now of KY, all of Clover Hill, Shenandoah co. VA." There are also Mitchells in Shephardstown including Nanthaniel who was Editor of Virginia Monitor who married Elizabeth Tabb, dau of Capt. John Tabb. on January 23, 1823. Marriage was by Rev. Since the first census was in 1790 that would probably be one possibility. Tax records are earlier - the 1783 list is on Maryland's GenWeb site. Land records are also a possibility although everyone didn't own land. I think Sharpsburg would be in the Lower Antietam 100 for the early records, but someone else may have a more definitive answer. Daniel WOLF (no E) died Feb 6, 1904, age 71-4-16 Catherine A. WOLF (no E) died Jan 2, 1898, age 63-8-9 They are buried in St. Mark's Reformed Church Cemetery at Wolfsville. Roger, there is a marriage date in the index for William S. to Mary C. Bowman 10/30/1848. The only other two groom listings for the surname are David. S. to Mary Ann Spickler 12/20/1854 and George I. to Sara Bender 2/5/1846. There are only two brides: Isabel Pittenger/Mt. Speck 2/7/1844 Agnes Pittenger/Benj. Resh 4/14/1847 There is nothing in estate distributions. The entries seem to be of a later date - they must have done their marrying in PA or another county in MD. The estate distributions are from 1778-1835 and the marriage index runs from 1799-1860. Hi Roger, There are Gossards galor here in Washington County. My wife's g-g-grandfather was David Gossard. He had 14 children by his 1st wife who died at age 35 [wonder why?] and 12 more by his 2nd wife who was the house-keeper during the 1st wife. Sanford is listed in the index as 82yrs. in the Daily Mail dated 7/18/1973. There is a Margie Gossard listed as 85yrs. in the Daily Mail dated 1/7/1976.
