I am looking for early evidence of the RITTER/RUTTER/RETTER family in Washington County, Maryland in the mid to late 1700's or early 1800's. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Jack was so gracious at to find this newspaper article. This Andrew J. Stottlemeyer (The paper gave it as S.) was my gg grandfather. I have recently received his Civil War pension records and would love to hear from anyone who can connect to this family. I'd love to share what I've found. I doubt that there would be a stone erected in any cemetery as money was quite scarce. However, if anyone has cemetery material from the Hancock area I sure would appreciate a look in the index to see if he might be mentioned. It seems that Andrew was married to Mary E. Just an added suggestion - Once you get a copy of the obit. contact the funeral home and/or church where services were held, and/or the cemetery where the deceased is buried, for a contact with the family. I usually send a written note to the survivor I am trying to contact in care of either the church, funeral home, or cemetery, with a request that it be forwarded, and send it Return Receipt Requested. In the Washington County Marriage Index which covers 1799-1860 are two groom entries[there are no brides]: TRAVER, Frederick/Catherine Geeler 8/2/1830 TRAVER, Andrew J./Mary Eliz. Bowles 10/29/1855 There are no Traver entries in Distribution of Estate Accounts for 1778-1835. There are no Traver burials in Vol. II and III of the Cemetery Records [I believe there are 8 vol. - I only have 2] I don't know if there are alternate spellings. Good luck! Mrs. Agns Stevens, for fifteen years a public school teacher, died last Friday at Keedysville, aged about 50. Mrs. Elizabeth DAYWALT has been sentenced to the House of Corrections for three months for keeping a disorderly house on North Jonathan street, Hagerstown. Harvey HOCKMAN, an employe of the Norfolk and Western Railrod, was murderously assaulted with a pitchfork by an unknown man, wednesday night of last week, while passing Fennells livery stable in Hagerstown.

The Valley Register Friday, January 11, 1895 Middletown, Frederick Co., Maryland WASHINGTON COUNTY The wife of Mr. Wm. D. KAUFMAN, agent for the B. & O. Railroad Company at Keedysville, died on the 30th ult., after an illness of eight weeks, of typhoid fever, aged 29 years. She leaves a husband and three small children. Gruber W. CASTLE and Van L. WOLTZ, both of Williamsport, had a shooting match in Hagerstown New Years Eve. CAASTLE fired two bullets through WOLTZ's coat, but neither was hurt. CASTLE and his wife have had a falling out and it is said that WOLTZ is the cause.

WASHINGTON COUNTY Samuel EBERSOLE, who mysteriously disappeared from Hagerstown a few weeks ago, has been located in Florida. Mr. Peter K. HARTLE, father of postmaster HARTLE, of Hagerstown, died Sunday at his home near Leitersburg, aged 68 years. Mrs. Ann M. WINTERS, aged 73 years, was found dead by her children at her home at New Salem last Sunday morning.
