Another good resource for early Maryland information is the "Maryland Gazette" Newspaper which began in 1728 and is available on microfilm from various organizations. The very early issues did not contain a great deal of community news which would interest genealogists but reading through the paper offered a fascinating and first hand view of the real and often gritty history of our county. It also covered the "latest news" from other countries and states. I only wish I had the time to leisurely read through each issue while I had it available through inter library loan. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in history along with genealogy. Good morning Mr. Keller and others. I have done much research lately in an effort to establish the various reasons which motivated Governors Ogle and Sharpe to warrant or grant lands in the Indian Springs area to Englishman of Southern, MD. I have read abstracts of information that indicates that Governor Ogle once took a trip to Western, MD in an effort to observe for himself firsthand the boundaries of Maryland's Western regions. I suspect that members of the Mills family were granted Warrants for land along the Licking Creek beginning in 1746, as payment for their services to him o n that journey and additionally to assist in establishing or being a part of the frontier force necessary to settling the "Back Areas" and after the start of the French and Indian Wars for the protection of the Eastern regions of MD from the Indians. It appears over a course of ten years ( From 1746 to 1756) various members of the Mills family (Thomas, Michael, Jacob and James Mills) Patented more then 1000 acres of land. The initial Patent to Thomas Mills, dated 1746 contained 500 acres of land. Thomas Mills went onto to establish Ft Mills along the Licking Creek, while Michael and Jacob Mills established themselves as expert marksman with a musket, most notable for holding themselves up in a cave located in a cliff wall along the Licking Creek (Today known as Revells Cave) and killing Indians as they walked or floated down Licking Creek toward the settlement near Fort Frederick. This writer found the cave in October 2003 and David Mills of Cumberland obtained photographs of the cave in the spring of 2004. To anyone interested the photographs are available by request. Records of the period indicate that Thomas Mills was a Blacksmith and sometimes Trader with the Indians. It is believed by this writer that the Mills family of Licking Creek / Indians Springs MD area were originally from Southern Maryland (Western Banks of the Patuxent at Mount Calvert) where William Mills arrived from England (possibly Cratfield, England) sometime between 1658 and 1660. In the Autobiography of Robert A. Mills, dictated to his daughter Robertina, in 1928 when he was 98 years of age, Robert states that the Mills family arrived in 1660, which corroborates the records of that era in Southern, MD. Robert Mills was the Great, Great Grandson of John Mills, bn circa 1727. John Mills was one of the original Mills members to arrive at Licking Creek in the late 1740s. In the recent past the Great, Great, Great, Great, Great Grandson of John Mills, bn 1727 has been located and he has agreed to participate in the Mills DNA Project, sponsored by Family Tree DNA of Arizona. If in fact the Mills family of Licking Creek, MD area is related to the Mills of Patuxent, then it is expected that the sample DNA he submits will match with the sample submitted and posted by this writer more then a year ago. I encourage contact and comment by any persons who might have an interest or additional information concerning the Mills family, families related to the Mills family and other historical facts and information which will provide insight into the life and times, and the social and political fabric of the people occupying the lands of the Western reaches of present day Washington County, MD. Kindest regards, Michael A. Mills 7941 Bennett Branch Rd Mount Airy, Maryland 21771 Cell 301.370.4393 Home 301.831.5659
If you want to search land records for a patent of 1738, you would have to look at Prince George's County. All of the western lands were part of Prince George's County until 1748 when Frederick County was formed. Washington County was formed in 1776 from Frederick County. J Keller

I hope the passage below will be of some interest to Listers, and isn't too long. It reinforces the fact about Prince George's County and land records of present Wash Co, as mentioned by J Keller, below. Mike ---- [Hagerstown Mail, Sep 9, 1870] Dropping into the sheriff's office a day or two since, we found Mr. Sol B. Rohrer, of our place, overhauling some very memorable parchments belonging to his family... which, along with the Hagers, were the pioneers of civilization in the valley of the Conococheague and Antietam. We selected a conveyance to which was dangling, as to a treaty between nations, a poderous seal in wax, with the present coat of arms of our State impressed on one side and 'St. George and the Dragon' on the other. The document bore date Jan. 16, 1739, being, as was recited, 'the twenty-fifth year of our dominion,' and was issued by 'Charles, Absolute Lord and Proprietary of the Province of Maryland and Avalon, Lord Baron of Baltimore,' etc. It recites that 'Whereas Jacob Roarer, of Prince George County [how very few persons living here know that they occupy a portion of what was once Prince George's County!], by his humble petition to our agent for transagment (sic) of our land affairs within this province,' etc., 'did sell fifty acres of vacant land lying in and being in county aforesaid, about a mile from Anteatam (sic) Creek and about three miles from Shirk's mill', etc. The whole document, as well as the other deeds, are quite curious and interesting, and to future historians may prove valuable. It was issued by Samuel Ogle, Lieutenant-Governor of the province. "History of Western Maryland," Vol II. J. Thomas Scharf, Philadelphia, 1882. The Valley Register was published from about 1850 through the late 1980's (not positive on the start or ending date). There is no index that I know of. The Frederick Library (C. Burr Artz) has it on microfilm from 1857 to 1900. The Frederick Historical Society has it from 1857 to about 1980. The films for 1857 to about 1861 are spotty with many issues missing. There are a few issues missing on later films. There are no known existing copies before 1857. Jack Keller
I am looking for information on Nehemiah STONE. I believe he's connected to the STONES that lived in Maryland in the late 1600 and1700's. Such as Govenor William STONE, and also a daughter of Zachary WADE'S (Theodosia), who married a William STONE. Zachary WADE was my 5x great-grandfather. I'd like to see the two families connect again. I know that there was also a David STONE , Thanks again Brenda

The index runs from 1799 - 1860 The Distribution of Estate Accounts 1778-1832 lists only two females, Mary and Elizabeth There is an equity case over two Piper estates in The Torchlight, Nov. 30, 1824 and two people mentioned in the case are John Stone and Mary his wife. The only Stone in Vol. III of the cemetery records is Ezra. There are 14 Stone burials in Vol. II. There is a William H. buried in the Boonsboro Cemetery who died in 1888 at age 47 years. Are your certain of the county? Washington County formed out of Frederick in 1776 so anything earlier would be there. Good luck! Hello, Wanted to tell you that there is a small grave site very near to where I live just east of Hagerstown. RUTTER, Margaret b. 8 Aug. 1754 d. 18 June 1797 m. 8 Aug 1772 RUTTER, Edmund d. (n.o.i.) Had 12 children, 9 sons and 3 daughters Several other graves, plain stones. The site is surrounded by very large old lilac trees. Hope this is some help to you.
Checked through all seven of my cemetery books: A few Ritter, but the dates were all late 1800's or early 1900's. No Retter at all. GRAVEYARD ON EARL HORST FARM NEAR FUNKSTOWN, MD VOL. Patsy, in Vol. II of the Cemetery Records there is the following information in the Mt. Olivet Cemetery, west of Hancock, on Route 40: STOTTLEMYER, A. J. Co. A. 1st MD P. H. B. Cav. d. (n.o.i) [no other information] STOTTLEMYER, __________ w/o A. J. Stottlemyer d. (n.o.i.) So there is apparently a gravesite but the stones did not have dates on them. There are Stottlemeyer/Stottlemyer marriages beginning in 1814 going to 1859. There are 11 grooms and 9 brides in the index, but not Andrew. The index only goes to 1860, so A.J. may have married after that or married somewhere else. . Another spelling variation in the cemetery listing is STOTELMYER. One Elias, b. 3 Sept 1828 d. 21 May 1915 and his wife Anna C. Lantz are buried in the Smithsburg Cemetery at Smithsburg, MD. (Vol. III) There are also some buried in the Presbyterian Church Graveyard, High Street, Hancock and their name is spelled STOTLEMEYER. (Vol. II) Lauren Brantner Patsy Pifer wrote: >Jack was so gracious at to find this newspaper article. This Andrew J. >Stottlemeyer (The paper gave it as S.) was my gg grandfather. Is there an index available for the Valley Register? If so, what time period does it cover? John Rhodes
