    3. Ok Folks: You have given me an explaination of sorts. Its true the land in Washington County is poor and its also tue the the general migration was to the West and the South. I have a problem with the Civil war part, the migrations to the West actually started in the late 1700's, families had large broods and the original farms couldn't support all of them, part of my family was on the move into Ohio by 1800 and I would guess for this reason. The Civil War did play a large factor but only after 1860. No one has mentioned land inducements (ie Railroads etc) which could have been a factor. 3. Brenda - my husband's Brantners went from coast to coast in the 1800's. My husband's GGrandfather who was born in Washington County in 1820 but moved as a young man to Richland County Ohio got caught up the hype over the California Gold rush and caught a ship to go around Cape Horn in 1849 with other young men from the county. He came back to Ohio and then made another trip to CA overland. After 1850 sometime, he returned to Ohio only to head up a wagon train to Colorado with his brother in 1859 to the gold rush here known as the Rush to the Rockies. Later, some of his children went to Oregon, some to California in the 1920's and some stayed in Colorado. This family branch has stories of wagon trains, stage stations, Indian uprisings, grasshopper plagues and irrigation ditches. Although they came for the gold rush - they rapidly found a place on the bottoms of the Platte River to grow native hay to sell to the others who came seeking - they settled down and raised families. 3. To clear up the confusion: Ogle County is in the NW corner of Illinois, not far from the Iowa border. Mt. Morris and Oregon are both names of towns in this county. There many be many other reasons, but many of the early settlers of Ogle Co. and neighboring Carroll Co., IL were of the Brethren faith and migrated in large numbers from Washington Co., MD at the time the IL territory was first opening up (approx. 1830- 1840?). I believe there was another large migration from Washington Co., MD to Ogle and Carroll Co., IL after the Civil War, again many of them being of the Brethren faith. My ancestors came to Carroll Co.in 1869, after the Civil War Battle of Antietam destroyed much of their community (Keedysville and Sharpsburg, MD). Again, there were many other groups migrating to these counties for other reasons, but this may explain some of the large migrations. Later, many of these same settlers and their families moved on to Iowa and Nebraska. Hope this helps. ----- Original Message ----- From: "gordon crooks" <glcrooks@bcpl.net> To: <MDWASHIN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, October 18, 2004 5:54 PM Subject: Re: [MDWASHIN] Moving > Your msg. is confusing did they settle in Ill or Orgeon? > > Gordon > ----- Original Message ----- > From: <Mdre007@aol.com> > To: <MDWASHIN-L@rootsweb.com> > Sent: Monday, October 18, 2004 5:40 PM > Subject: Re: [MDWASHIN] Moving > > >>I believe the Ogle Co. we are talking about is in Illinois. 3. Gordon, that was just one of the destinations. Contingents went to Miami, Franklin and Richland Counties, Ohio, a couple destinations in Kentucky, some in Jefferson County Iowa as well as other locations in Illinois. I read an article several years ago about farming in MD in the first part of the 1800's. Until the Mennonite farmers showed others how to restore the soil with bat guano (which was imported from South America if I recall correctly), the soil in the east got worn out and became unproductive. We just hear more about Ogle County because of Roger's large database and the efforts to enlarge and expand it. A good book to read about the devastation of the Civil War is Kathleen Ernst's Too Afraid to Cry, Maryland Civilians in the Antietam Campaign. There are also pockets of southerners who settled in the western US after the Civil War - many from Virginia because it was so devastated. 2. From a couple of researchers(David Zellers and Roger Cramer) I saw replies to a very similar question. David said lots of families left for better farmland that was for sale at that time from the government. He has lots of old history books that lists Maryland families that came to Ogle Co. IL. Roger brought up a very good reason also why they left and settled here. The people were tired of the fighting and being run over by the Northern and Southern soldiers. I never thought about the Civil War taking place that far North but when I look at a map, most of the battles took place in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia. (Gettysburg, Antieam). Brenda

My ancestors headed down the river with many of those folks but stopped on the other side of the river in Kentucky. Some other reasons were that many had large families and there wasn't enough farm land to go around to make a living. The good farm land in the Ogle Co. area was just becoming available at cheap prices so many moved and there were many jobs available in the new communities being formed. Word of mouth brought more. Also many farms were destroyed in the Civil War causing some to move.
