Terri: There is one possible way to try and resolve your Farrow name, see if your library has a copy of Dr. George Black's book "The Surnames of Scotland" and look up both names. If not listed in this book I would say thats its 99% accurate, then you are German. This is a research book, so go to your head library. Site has been very informative today. Reading the thoughts of others often makes me aware of another place to search. I am still looking for anything on the Gilpin family before 1789. Any clues would be appreciated. Debbie Gilpin, Kentucky

Betty, could you please check for any NEIKIRK/NIKIRK/NICIRK/NEWKIRK/NEUKIRK/NEUKIRCH or FREYMEYER/var spellings after 8/1808 in that Obit finder? Am looking for a female, Mary/Maria/Margaret Sabilla NEIKIRK, was was previously married to a FREYMEYER in PA, and had several children with him, then remarried Henry NEIKIRK and came to MD and had several children with him. Henry died abt 9/1808 in Hagerstown and his will shows everything to his 'beloved' wife Mary. Have not been able to find anything of the widow NEIKIRK/NICIRK. I guess she could have remarried #3! Or returned to PA! Would be great if an OBIT also shows up for Henry and Mary. Children of their marriage (a second for both) were George Adam, Henry, Jr, Anna Martha, and Samuel. It is from Heritage books and can be ordered thru: www.Heritagebooks.com. This might be all you need since has all the counties involved! Willow bend also sells the book version for $200.00! Hi everyone! I've just returned from a research trip to both Hagerstown and Frederick. I'm researching Ludwig Keedy, the person I believe to be the father of John Joseph Keedy and my ggg grandfather. General Question: In Frederick I found an interesting land transaction noted in a 1944 letter where a tract of land was conveyed in 1764 from Henry Keedy to George Adam Geeting BUT the conveyance was signed not by Henry but by Ludwig Guthing. Under what circumstances would this type of transaction have taken place? Is it possible that the scribe entered Henry's name in error on the deed? Keedy Question: Mr. Guy Jones, in his article on George Adam Geeting theorizes that Henry Keedy may have been George Adam's older brother since no ship records can be found for George Adam. George Adam's children stated that their father left Germany at age 18. I know that Ludwig arrived here at age 15 and I have seen some family histories that show George Adam as Ludwig's brother. Has any more new information been unearthed on this family line that anyone is aware of? Am I correct in understanding that Johann Joseph was Ludwig's father and that he died onboard ship? Is it correct that Johann Heinrich married Joseph's widow? Do I understand correctly that Johann Ludwig had an uncle, a cousin and a brother all named Johann Heinrich? Whew! Any thoughts appreciated. Alice

Does anyone know if there is a printed transcript/abstract or index to St. John's Evang. Luth Church, Hagerstown? Or where originals would be? I am looking to prove the marriage of Susanna Reitenauer/Ridenour b. 1786 (d/o Martin Reitenauer and Catherine Kershner) and David Barr/Behn October 12, 1805. Maria E. Brower, CA

I have always been told that my FARROW line was of English Descent. Then a ancestor's bio said Scots-Irish which made sense since a "Fighting John Farrow" arrived in the colonies was Scotch Irish. But now... In Scharf's History of Western Maryland he states; His father (Nathaniel) and mother (Mary Mccall) were natives of Maryland, and were descended respectively from French and German ancestry...now I ask you, which name is French and which is German? McCall sounds Irish to me...what am I missing here? Also, I see several other errors in the passages, date of death for Nathan is 1860 as per his stone and death notice yet Scharf states it was 1859, and it states Mary is living with her son Henry Clay Farrow in Garrett City Ind when she never lived there...she was in Martinsburg WVA. Any help? Terri Farrow OHIO -- WOW! Homepage (http://www.wowway.com)

Greetings Betty. Noticed your obit info listing. May I ask if you find a Butner surname? In Frederick Co. in 1750; then some left; possibly some afterward when Washington Co formed. Thank you for your consideration. jclayb1@cox.net
This is my second post on this topic - apparently the first went to lala land. I managed to get hold of an old treatise from John Hopkins University Studies The Land System In Maryland, 1720-1765 by Clarence P. Gould, Ph.D. (Michael Fisher Professor of History in the University of Wooster) Baltimore, John Hopkins Press 1913 Apparently one of the ways Daniel Dulaney helped the German settlers at Frederick was by providing them with "pistoles" to protect themselves. Has anyone ever seen the list of 25 German settlers at Frederick mentioned below? And has anyone seen any publications from the Society for the History of Germans to Maryland listed below with reference to Hagerstown and Jonathan Hager? p. 87 "Daniel Dulany was one of the first as well as one of the largest and most successful dealers in Frederick County. When he first took up large tracts in this region, it was generally thought he was on the road to financial ruin, but on his land was formed one of the earliest settlements. This start, combined with the favorable location, soon created on his property the metropolis of the Monocacy Valley. In 1745 Dulany himself laid out a town, which he called Frederick; he also gave land for churches, and seems to have assumed a sort of guardianship over the community." This passage is footnoted with "A letter signed by twenty-five German settlers read in part; "One of the Principal Gentlemen of this Country (Mr. Dulany) who lives at Annapolis, the Capital of this Province, was so kind as to Assist us wth 306 Pistoles & to free us from ye Captain's Power, we are Perswaded that this Gentlemen will be Serviceable to Aid and Assist all Germans that will Settle in this Province." (Calvert Papers, M.S., No. 295 1/2) p. 88 "Another place which developed in a manner very similar to Frederick was Hagerstown. Jonathan Hager, a German immigrant, settled in that region and took up land. Following the lead of Dulany, he built up his settlement, and after the close of the Indian Wars, laid out a town. Eddis writes: 'A German adventurer, whose name is Hager, purchased a considerable tract of land in this neighborhood, and with much discernment and foresight, determined to give encouragement to traders, and to erect proper habitations for the stowage of goods, for the supply of the adjacent country. His plan succeeded: he has lived to behold a multitude of inhabitants on land which he remembered unoccupied; and he has seen erected in places appropriated by him for that purpose, more than a hundred comfortable edifices, to which the name of Hager's Town is given, in honour of the intelligent founder.'" The author says, see also Sollers, "Jonathan Hager," in Society for the History of Germans in Maryland, second annual report. page 85 "At an early period Augustine Hermann took up a large tract known as Bohemia Manor in Cecil County and rented much of it out to Germans whom he brought over from the Delaware." This piece interested me because I have an allied line of Rineharts in New Jersey that have a long history there. Some of them seem to crop up in Washington County Maryland. Lauren Brantner

Gould, Ph.D. (Michael Fisher Professor of History in the University of Wooster) Baltimore, John Hopkins Press 1913 I thought it might help me understand the land history better and it did. Among the larger land owners in Frederick County in 1763 were John Diggs, Philip Key, Edward Diggs, Richard Snowden, Edward Dorsey and James Brooks - most or possibly all of them resided outside of Frederick County. There is a table on page 77 which indicates that in the 1752 Frederick County (from which Washington was carved in 1776) had 283,237 acres of patented land which belonged to 1,032 landholders with an average holding of 370.1 acres. p. 87 "Daniel Dulany was one of the first as well as one of the largest and most successful dealers in Frederick County. Betty: Thank you for your response. My 3g-gparents were David Little and Elizabeth Woltz m. 30 Apr 1795 in Lutheran Church of Hagerstown, Washington Co., MD. Elizabeth's obit 24 Apr 1841. David's mind failed following her passing. He committed suicide. Obit was 28 Jan 1842, all in Hagerstown. I would like to know if the above facts are confirmed and if any further info is available.
