    3. Walker can be a German name. There was also a connection between the early German settlers and Welsh settlers - some intermarriage in my husband's Brantner German Reformed/Lutheran lines. 3. Ah, well then, am glad I threw in the info about the Presbyterians as an after thought. In the MD and PA area the Reformed church congregations were mostly comprised of German-speakers, so was curious/puzzled about English-sounding Walkers and Hudsons buried in a Reformed cemetery from such an early period (although they could have married into the faith, I guess). Anyway, glad it helped. Perhaps they were Scots, not English. Sam On Wed, Oct 26, 2011 at 11:12 PM, Joan Majtenyi <[email protected]> wrote: > Thanks Sam for the info. 3. Whenever you're curious about something, you might look it up online at Wikipedia.org., assuming you don't have any kind of encyclopedia at home or at hand. It's a great source of information and generally speaking quite accurate. Have always been amazed at what one can find there, and I use it just about every week at least once (most recently for the history of some songs, e.g., You are my sunshine and Stand by me). It's a great resource. The entry for the Reformed Church starts as follows and the link is: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reformed_church. You can read the rest if you go to the site itself. ""The Reformed churches are a group of Protestant denominations characterized by Calvinist doctrines. They are descended from the Swiss Reformation inaugurated by Huldrych Zwingli but developed more coherently by Martin Bucer, Heinrich Bullinger and especially John Calvin. In the sixteenth century the movement spread to most of Europe, aligning with national governments in most cases, though several of these national or specific language based churches later expanded to worldwide denominations. There are now many different reformed churches: a 1999 survey found 746 Reformed denominations worldwide"" (The Presbyterian church is also part of the Reformed church movement as John Knox brought the Reformation to Scotland after spending time in Switzerland where he was influenced by John Calvin). 3. Yes, Laura that was a great help. This with the census records helps me put together the family of my ggg grandfather John Walker. I had suspected that Sarah who married Thomas Hudson was his sister, and now I see that Rachel was probably his mother. In 1810 there was a woman of the right age living with a John Walker 16-25 and a wife of similar age in Boonsboro. Then he's gone (as he must be as his first two children are born in PA), but now Sara and Thomas Hudson are in Boonsboro with a woman of Rachel's age. In 1830 they are still there but no woman, because she died in 1829 according to the cemetery record. Don't you love it when the pieces come together? One question remains for me; what denomination is this reformed church? Reformed what. I'm totally ignorant of the various early churches and their affiliations. Do you or does someone else know? Thanks again for all your help. As someone recently said, this is the most helpful of all rootsweb lists. 3. Lauren~       What is the exact title for the book?  Would I have to buy the whole series or could I purchase Volume 2??  Also, if can't find, is there a place we could have access to the books when we come down to MD to make a copy of the obit??? Mary Ellen ________________________________ From: Lauren Brantner <[email protected]> To: [email protected] Sent: Wed, October 26, 2011 12:39:47 PM Subject: Re: [MDWashin] Washington County Cemetery Records Mary Ellen St. Michael's is in Vol. II with both the Chambers entries. These volumes by Morrow and Morrow are the work of Samuel Webster Piper who read all the cemeteries in the county before 1935-36.  A Hagerstown Chapter of the N.S.D.A.R Chapter typed them.  I don't know if they are online - I don't usually look for the things I own and have already used. I was quite surprised to find the Ridenour obit book I payed $75 online. Incidentally, you can read the devastation of the Civil War in Vol. VII of these records - it contains the Civil War dead. There are entries like 50 unknown buried in two trenches in S.E. corner of John H. Beckley's field on north of Middletown Road. Eberly, Adam of VA and 1 unknown buried on Worthington's farm near Monocacy bridge on east side of creek.  Or Buried in the Nl.E. corner of the graveyard of German Reformed Church in Burkettsville, Lamar, Lt. 3. Mary Ellen St. Col. Legion of GA, Thompson, Lt. and 2 unknown. There were 25 named, ranked confederates buried in Mrs. Hoffman's barn field near Boonsboro. 3. Joan, I'm glad that Ruth picked up on the Walker entry that I missed. Now you have it all. The stones are weathering a lot in that cemetery. I have a picture of headstones for Brantners that were clear in the late 1980s that were totally weathered away by 2002. There was also a stack of headstones on one side of the church. If you contact me offline, I'll look to see if I can find my pictures of the cemetery and the sign so you can see what it looks like. If I recall the Boones that Boonesboro is named after are buried there. How the cemetery was read may make a difference on how names are listed too. 2. Mary Ellen Chambers
    3. Lauren~       Do your cemetery records or if they are on-line, include Catholic Cemeteries??  Do they give cause of death??  My husband's g grandfather is buried in the small graveyard behind St. Michael RC Church in Clearspring.  We have been curious re: cause of death, etc.  The stone is nice size but D/T elements the carving is fading.  Next to him is the same type stone for his young daughter Anastasia who drowned in 1858 approx.  We have her cause D/T a small newspaper clipping.  John CHAMBERS expired Oct. 31, 1870.   Mary Ellen Chambers
