Jim: Conococheague league, which has its roots in an area first inhabited by the Indians and then the white sellers who for the most part (early) were Scots Presbyterian from Ulster and Scotland and they use this name . In a recent telephone book for Washington Co. Md. there are 94 Barnhart families and in Franklin Co. Pa. there are 136 families. In the same book there are 17 Bowders families in Franklin Co. Pa. and 3 Bowders family in Wash. Co. Md. IN the obit finder for Wash. Co. Md 1790 to 1943, there were 57 Barnharts noted...George 54 6 April 1909; George 83 13 Dec. 1910; Mrs. George 78 9 Feb 1909. ( The date after the name indicates the date the obit was in the Daily Mail newspaper of Wash. Co.MD.) Elizabeth Barnhart w/o George Barnhart b. 4 July 1799;d. 8 July 1871.She was buried in Lutheran Church of JACOBS Graveyard , north of Leitersburg, MD. near State Line, Pa. A John Bowders age 41 yr., 16 days, died 24 Mar 1867...he is buried in the same Lutheran Cemetery mentioned above. There 22 BArnharts mentioned in this Vol. 5 of Wash. Co. In the Washington County Cemetery records Vol 5, page 88 there is a Samuel Bowers born 30 Dec. 1815 and died 7 Oct.1854 and his wife, Ruth Ann, age 58 yr.,2m,16 day; died 1 May 1876. They are both buried in St.Paul's Lutheran Reformed Church on Route 40, near Clearspring,Md. The first church was built 1747, 2nd. church built 1795.
