    3. Dear Ms. Farrow: Never assume. Just because the wife is not on the SS Index does not mean she is still alive. She may have received the Benifits in Florida. She may have remarried and died under a different name. Never say never. I would go to Rootsweb.Look in both the County that the person died and the County that the benefit was last received. See if there are any Volunteers to do lookups. Ask their opinion. Ask for an Obit, Phone Book check or maybe the Death Cert can be viewed without paying for it. Florida is only $5. I do not know the rules of AARP. However they may be able to forward a letter to you living person if she is a Member. They will not tell you one way or the other if she belongs. Also try Genealogy Kindness. They have really Great Volunteers. Kathi In Oregon

Thank you, Teresa Farrow --- Teresa- You can't assume much from the last benefit location. I'd suggest reading the RootsWeb Guide lesson on SSDI on this very topic which includes the following notation about Florida addresses: "Consider the possibility that a person might have had two official residences also; many "snowbirds" do." See: http://www.rootsweb.com/~rwguide/lesson10.htm You might try contacting Social Security--they won't give you someone's address but they WILL forward a letter for you if they have a current address for someone and you send a request to them to forward the letter to the person. Of course, if the person is no longer living, they can't forward the message for you. Just because you haven't found the person in the SSDI is no guarantee that they are still living--the SSDI is not all-inclusive. Again, for more information read the above guide lesson. Joan

    1. Re: [MDWASHIN] Estate Records
    2. Lauren Brantner
    3. Richard, there is a general index to probate records 1777-1850 [FHL mf 14644] a microfilm you can bring in to any LDS Church Family History Center. There are some records that are at Maryland State Archives and some that are in the Washington County Courthouse. There are different kinds of probate records - wills, administration bonds, inventories of estates, administration accounts, estate distributions, orphans court proceedings as well as some other minor ones. The wills are in volumes by dates - for example Volumes A--B runs from 1777-1817 and so on and they are on microfilm. Someone who is more familiar with Maryland State Archives will tell you how to research there. The orphan's court proceedings are in a card index (#84) which covers the period 1806-1964 at MSA.
