This is what I have on 1850 Census Washington County Hagerstown District 2 Robert Mills 50 Rosana Mills 38 Jacob Mills 19 John Mills 16 Ratcher Mills 14 Elizabeth Mills 12 Matilda Mills 9 Elizabeth is my direct desendant. John brother fought in the Civil War. He married Susan Everett 1859 Littlecove, Franklin Co. Pa They had 2 boys Joseph & William. After John died she married in 1868 to a Ritenhouse (Ritenhour) in Washington Co. Do you have anything I could follow back on the parents of Robert & Rosana Mills or when they died? Any help is very much appreciated. Thanks June

    3. Sorry June, Most of my resources cover the period of late 1700's to about 1830 or so. The marriage index just goes to 1860 and I only have two of the seven cemetery volumes. Perhaps someone else on the list who has all the volumes can do a look up for you. Robert and Rosana aren't in the two volumes I have nor are they in the published Bible Records. I'm hoping we have another Mills researcher somewhere who'll chime in. 3. There is a Mills family Bible in the Washington Free Library and there are four John Mills entries; however, not one of them fits the date you have. There are a few Mills entries in the marriage index 1799-1860, but no John entries. In Vol. II of the cemetery records there is a couple buried in the Clearspring Mennonite Church Graveyard: one grave plain stone Infants, three graves, plain stones MILLS, John H. age 83y 5m 9d d. 28 Jan 1936 MILLS, Rebecca P. w/o John H. b. 1861 d. 1896 three graves, no stones. [the latest date for these tombstone readings was in 1936 or so - so you can see things were very deteriorated already then - there are 7 volumes; I just have two.] In Vol III Graveyard on Wilbur JENNINGS farm, north end of Brownville MILLS, John H. age 78y 10m 6d d. 25 Feb. 1919 MILLS, Lucinda w/o John H. Mills, age 79y 11m 15d d. 7 June 1920 Lauren Brantner June Lachler wrote: >Hi > I am looking for someone related to John Mills born 1836 Maryland. >He died in 1865. >Thanks June > > >==== MDWASHIN Mailing List ==== >If you have any problems feel free to address those to the list administrator: MDWASHIN-admin@rootsweb.com > >============================== >Search the US Census Collection. 3. There are only three grooms in the Washington County marriage index which covers 1799-1860. There are 9 brides with this surname. EVERHART, John/Julianna HARBAUGH 12/26/1822 Dn./Mary DUTROW 10/19/1847 Romanus/Eliz. THOMBSON 2/28/1850 JACQUES, Arthur/Sr. LOWE 3/17/1812 Lancelot Jr./Mary BOWMAN 6/2/1812 Lancelot/Juliann GEHR 3/18/1846 From Family Bible Records in the Washington County Free Library, Hagerstown, MD there is one Mary Jacques in the Milliken Family Bible. She was born Wednesday 15 Feb. 1835 and her father is Lancelot and her mother Mary Jacques. As you can see there must have been two Lancelot Jacques. Maryland Advocate Nov. 10, 1827 "Died Mon 26th Oct last at his res near Hancock, Wash co.Md, Dr. Lancelot Jacques, aged about 72 years." The Torchlight November 8, 1827 "Died at his res near Hancock, in this co., after a short illness, on Monday morning 29th ult, Dr. Lancelot Jacques, aged about 72 years, native of England, emigrated to this country early in life; educated at New Ark School. He served a short time as a surgeon in the American army during the Rev war and three times elected to the legislature of MD; also filled several other public situations." The Torchlight March 25, 1830 "Married same day [Thurs last] by Rev. John Winter, George I. Brewer to Miss Elizabeth, dau of Lancelot Jacques Esq all of this co." In 1801 Denton Jacques is listed as owing taxes in Allegany County and he frequently is listed as having letters at the Hagerstown Post Office. There are references to Jacques' Iron Works, Jacques' Forge and Jacques' Furnace. Mail is directed to people who are working there and it is reference to where people lived "near Jacques' Forge". Frederick Town Herald Nov. 22, 1806 "Undivided moiety of 2000 a for sale now in the possession of Denton Jacques to be sold at hs. of Daniel Harbine at the Big Spring nr the premises, in pursuance of chancellor of Md, in Wash co; Mr. D. Jacques living at the furnace will show the land - Lancelot Jacques, Trustee, Wash co Hagerstown Gazette Oct. 6, 1812 [contains a description which may help you find the iron works location] "Sale of land in the neighborhood of John Mason, Esq. and Jacques iron works, called the Resurvey on Pipe Tomahawk...." Lancelot Jacques sold a farm on the Potomac two miles from Hancock Town in 1799. In 1803 he was Justice of the Peace. In 1807 Ann and Lancelot Jacques are adm. of Joseph Hurst. Also be aware that there is an alternative spelling JACKES. Cemetery Books, Vol. II St. Peters Evangelical Lutheran Church at Clearspring JACQUES, Denton b. 4 May 1814 d. 16 April 1877 Sarah A., w/o Denton JACQUES, age 80y 3m 10d, d. 10 June 1889 Vol. III Smithsburg Cemetery at Smithsburg JACQUES, Lucien G. b. 8 Dec. 1898 d. 23 Apr. 1900 Julia A. w/o Lancelot JACQUES age 67y 4m 20 d, d. 20 Feb. 1860 Lancelot d. Widow and one heir. Lancelot was an administrator for William Blackmore and Daniel Miller. He also received a portion of Eve Dick's estate for use of Margaret Gower's heirs. 3. Lauren, Many thanks! In the Washington Co. Marriages index, I'm sure that John/Mag. MILLER 12/18/1807 are the parents of John/Eliz. YOUNG 11/30/1847. John and Magdalena/Maddelena also had a son George, which could be George W. in the marriage index. The Lutheran Church Graveyard in Locust Grove info on John and Magdalena has dates which confirm a second pedigree file I have, which I've hesitated to merge without some additional confirmation! 3. Alice There is a Letitia C. SMITH age 62 yd. d. 27 Oct. 1868 buried in the Methodist Churchyard, Boonsboro, MD (Vol. II p. 84) There is only one other Smith burial there, for MARGARET age 29 y d. 4 Jun 1844. I looked at the SMITH grooms in the marriage index and can't find a bride with Letitia as a first name. None are in the Bride's index either. With that first name, it may be misspelled and that's why you can find her sometimes. There was nothing in the newspaper extraction books I have. Other folks on the list have the other cemetery volumes. There is only one entry in Estate Distributions 1778-1835 LANTZ, Jacob. Adm. There are also other kinds of probate records. Good luck! Lauren Brantner NanK wrote: >I'm looking for information on Washington County Keefauvers (sp?). I'm >descended from Cyrus Keefauver (b. 3. Many thanks to Patricia and Cindy for their help with the Letitia Smith mysteries. It looks like there were at least three Letitia Smiths in Boonsboro: Letitia b. 1776 d. 1850 (In 1840 census) Letitia b. 1806 d. 1868 (Why doesn't she appear in 1850, 1860?) Letitia b. 1819 d. ? (In 1850, 1860 census) 'Guess I need to look in the 1820, 1830 censuses to see when Letitia became a widow. Perhaps the three females (1-16/20, 1-20/30, 1-30-40) listed in the 1840 census were not all daughters but daughters and granddaughter? Anyone know anything more about this Smith family?

    3. I'm looking for information on Washington County Keefauvers (sp?). I'm descended from Cyrus Keefauver (b. October 09, 1848, Washington County, MD) and Elizabeth Morris (b. March 11, 1849, Green County, PA). According to a relative, Cyrus' parents are John J. Keefauver and Elizabeth Young of Hagerstown, who also came to Fulton Co. According to the same relative, John J. Keefauver's parents are John Keefauver and Magdalena Miller. John and Magdalena's other children are George and Jacob H. Keefauver. I'd be happy to swap details if we're connected. Thanks, Nan

    3. In light of the recent discussion regarding prisoners, I offer the following: The History Channel will air a program called POWs of the American Revolution on Saturday 11 am and 12 noon I don't know how detailed it will be, but I'm sure it will be interesting.

    3. Tim- While I never heard a name for it, there was/is an old building just north of Kemp's Mill on the Old road that was used before they relocated the "Greencastle Pike". It's up near where that road now deadends, on the right side of the road. As a kid, I heard it referred to as the distillery. I think someone uses, or did use it, as a private home now. WE used to go there occasionally - I can't remember what we bought there, but am sure it wasn't anything produced by a distillery. This was back in the '30's. Seems there was a sawmill or something near there, on the other side of the road, at that time. Would be interesting what you may develop. 1. "Unlocking Your Past 2005" Speakers schedule now posted
    2. Unlocking Your Past
    3. Dear WASHIN-L er's, A few weeks ago we posted an announcement about an event called "Unlocking Your Past 2005", a FREE Family History Event being held in Waynesboro, Pennsylvania on March 16th through the 18th. At that time, our website was only partially complete and did not have information about the schedule of speakers, their topics and other event activities. That defect has now been remedied. If you go to the website, look on pages 3 and 4 for the event schedule, and on page 6 are pictures of the 2003 event. If you live in, or have a genealogical interest in: Franklin, Fulton or Adams Counties in Pennsylvania, or Washington County, Maryland I strongly encourage you not to miss-out on this opportunity which comes just once every two years. It's free, and worth every penny of it! Go to: http://home.earthlink.net/~unlockingyourpast/ Sincerely, Steve Whitney, Event Publicity E-mail: unlockingyourpast@earthlink.net Phone: (717) 765-8197
