    2. Richard Allen
    3. I need to find the first name of the wife of the Jacob Good who sold a parcel in 1787 to Joseph Miller. This is, per the index, in Volume E p. 619.  I could not bring up this document on-line as it said the images for the older land records were not available.   Richard

    3. I should have added another fact that I found in court records of Washington Co-- that in August 1778 Jacob Brumbaugh (father of John) was sued by Daniel Miller in the local Washington Co. court. The case was continued and not heard by the court until August 1779; it appears from the clerk¹s manuscript notes that it was decided in favor of the plaintiff. The facts of the suit do not appear. Nor the cause of action. Does anyone know what family this Daniel Miller might have come from?? Ned Donoghue

    3. This is an extract from the Minutes of the Committee of Observation of Elizabeth Town (later Hagerstown), MD in late 1776: "Dr. Col¹l Stull Treasurer for Washington County:          1776 Dec¹r 24 For so much received from the Dunkars and Menonist [sic] for their Fines v[i]z:                Šreceived from John Miller £54 paid to him by the following:                Jacob Broombaugh Jnr. £3..0..0                John Broombaugh         £3..0..0                Š[others]Š."                                 John Broombaugh/Brumbaugh was born about 1760-- which I guess at because Dunkers don¹t record infant baptisms because they had none, and to be subject to a non-enroller fine, he must have been eligible for military draft in 1776, therefore 16 or older, and 16 years before would put him born 1760-- married Mary Elizabeth Miller sometime about 1780-90. I do not know what family she came from, so as long as the subject is Millers in Washington County, MD, I thought I would ask if anyone knows which Miller family she came from -- perhaps a daughter of John Miller (above) above who is positively identified in an earlier Minute as "Dunker". What do you think? Does anyone know this family? Can you help me identify her date of marriage or parentage? Their children¹s names were: Eva Miller, Mary, David, Daniel, and Jacob S. Ideally I¹d like to get a cite to some piece of hard evidence too, but I know that is unlikely. Many thanks. Ned Donoghue

    1. [MDWashin] German Wills
    2. Norman E. Donoghue, II
    3. Dear Washington County people, My German immigrant ancestor died in 1799 and was buried in Washington County on his farm. He was literate and did many real estate deals during his lifetime, presumably in English. He died owning maybe a dozen tracts of land on which he settled all 7 of his children. His sons paid Mary his wife her dower. His complex estate was settled by amicable agreement among his children over about 8 years with deeds showing up in the deed office reciting monetary consideration to all the other children from the child buying this particular piece. I have heard it said that in Pennsylvania many wills written in the German language were not probated but instead kept in separate files. Many still exist there. They could never be abstracted by people who did not read German nor understood by those functionaries who made no attempt to translate them. Does anyone know if this happened in Frederick or Washington counties in Maryland? Do they have a separate drawer where they have un-probated German wills like I'm told some PA counties do? Ned

    3. Washington County followers: I have some wives of children in my 1750-1800 Johann Jacob Brumbaugh family that I would enjoy having some help in identifying their origins: John Brumbaugh (ca 1760-1829) son of Jacob and perhaps an Elder and farmer, was married about 1780 I think to Mary Elizabeth who we think was a Miller. She was born in Frederick Co ca 1772. She died in 1834 in Bedford Co, PA. John was a Brethren or Dunker and we suppose she was too. Any ideas on what Miller family she belonged to? There were several I think in the area North and West of Hagerstown. We have one daughter of theirs as "Eva Miller" which also leads in the same direction. Other children we David, Daviel and Jacob as well as Mary which was John's mother's Christian name (Mary Elizabeth Angle or Engel). Daniel S. Brumbaugh (ca 1772-1824), son of Jacob and a farmer, married about 1797-98 an Elizabeth (1779-1860) who may have been a Long family member. There were Longs who were in the general neighborhood. Their children included Susanna, Elizabeth, Daniel David, Louisa, Maria, Thomas Jefferson, Isabella and Rosanna Caroline. They were Reformed. George Brumbaugh (1783-1840?), son of Jacob, was a brewer and farmer, married about 1800 a Marie Louisa (or Lovice) Gelwicks or Gelwix who is also thought to have been from a nearby family. There was a Frederick Gelwicks from Emmitsburg referred to in a 1824 Fred Co court case. I also do not have a confirmation of the origins of Johann Jacob Brumbaugh¹s own wife who is also Mary Elizabeth and we think her maiden name was Angle or Engel originally. Might be the daughter or sister of Henry Angle who lived in that Conococheague neighborhood. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I enjoy watching the chatter on this ListServe; it's very informative. Thank you! Ned

    3. Roger, This family dates back to before 1740 in PA if I recall correctly - Pfafenberger and other spelling variations. There is a Poffenberger website that will pop up when you Google it and there is a Poffenberger Bible in the library in Hagerstown, but they are the Wash Co parts of the family. William's History of Frederick Co. has some data in it on the family. I tracked them for awhile because Mary Brantner married Christian Poffenberger. I needed to sort, but I didn't track them all.
