    3. John, the publication is MARRIAGES LICENSES OF FREDERICK COUNTY, MARYLAND 1778-1810, Margaret E. Myers, Willow Bend 2001. I would have checked earlier just to be sure. They were compiled from the courthouse records and reflect the date couples took out marriage licenses - so they are like the index for Washington County. They may or may not be actual marriage dates. And of course, there is theoretically always the possibility someone took out a license and didn't marry. There is no reference church affiliation. I guess you would classify this as a civil record. Someone else who knows more about this might be able to chime in, but I believe that you had to have a license for any clergyman to marry you. I don't know if anyone has found a church ceremony and not a license - that would be interesting to know about. I don't know enough about the state borders, and the Mason Dixon line to know if there was territory that went back and forth between PA and MD. That might make a difference in where your record is. If you are searching Reformed Church you might check out the Shepherdstown, WV area. There is a Reformed Church and the Churchyard cemetery there was established in 1774 so there was a Reformed Church on site there fairly early. It is just across the Potomac from Washington County. I visited the site in March of 2004. I think this is along a fairly well traveled emigrant's route from VA to PA. It is also the route Robert E. Lee used to advance north during the Civil War. I think the church was still in use, but I couldn't find anyone around to talk with and ran out of time. Next trip back, I want to investigate it more. Across the street was a Lutheran cemetery also established in 1774 - I think it may have been a union church at one time. There is a Reformed Church archive online, and I've found them to be helpful although they don't always have the records that you are looking for. Lauren Brantner john112g3@aol.com wrote: >Lauren, > You wrote " I can tell you there are no HERR marriages in the Frederick County marriage licenses covering 1778-1810." As John Peter Herr and Susannah X must have been married ca. 1783 (he was in Yorktown, VA until Aug 1781 and they were in Hagerstown in 1784), there would be no need to search earlier dates in Frederick Co. if the index you have covered "all" Frederick Co. Reformed churches. > >-----Original Message----- >From: Lauren Brantner <lrbrant@concentric.net> >To: MDWASHIN-L@rootsweb.com >Sent: Sun, 20 Mar 2005 09:58:15 -0700 >Subject: Re: [MDWASHIN] Reformed Church Marriages ca. 1782-3 > > >John, there are earlier published records for Frederick County - I just happen to have that particular volume. 3. Lee, There is an early estate in the distributions for Washington County: BOWER, Jacob. Adm. Magdalen, William Philbe. 3/29/1783; widow, Jacob, Barbara, Conrad, John, Catherine, Mary, George, Susanna, Susanna Aulebaugh paid 5/31/1799 t. T56.14.14 [pounds, shillings, pence]. Also BOWART(D), Margaret. Adm. George BRUMBAUGH. 4/14/1830; Mary McDANIEL, George, Margaret FIGALEY, Christine KIFER, Michael, Jacob, Andrew, Sarah CREAGER. T $11.07. There are 57 grooms in the marriage license index for Washington County - BAUER is a very common German name that I believe means farmer, so you are going to run into lots of them. I think I've encountered them in WV in Jefferson County as connections to some of the lines I research there. . There is a William Bowers listed in THIS WAS THE LIFE, he was a grand juror in August of 1752 in Frederick County; also in August of 1754. There is a Rev. George Bower listed in newspaper abstracts by Wright, 1799-1805. In Myers' Marriages Licenses for Frederick Co. MD 1778-1810 are these entries: June 17, 1780 BOWER, Martin to HANDSHEW, Barbara Nov. 17, 1780 BOWER, Phillip to PERRY, Sarah Dec. 4, 1810 BOWER, William F. to ATKINS, Rachel Mar. 22, 1809 BOWERS, Margaret to COOK, Thomas May 11, 1807, BOWERS, Susannah to FREEZE, George Hope something clicks. 3. Thomas Stone was a signer of the Declaration of Independence and was from Charles County, Maryland. Since what is now Prince Georges, Montgomery and even Washington counties were at one time part of Charles County I have forwarded your message to the members of the Charles County Maryland Genealogical Society in hopes that one of them can give you some help. You might want to post your query to the MDCharle-L message board at Rootsweb. 1. RE: [MDWASHIN] Books of Interest - Keefauver
    2. Nan, I couldn't find anything in the wills index, but I found a lot in "The Early History of Middletown, MD". There is 1 entry for a Miss Mary Magdalen Miller and 51 entries for Kefauver/Keafauver/Keefauver/Keifauver. 1 for John Keafauver, 1 for J. Harlan Kefauver, 1 for J. Hollin Kefauver, 1 for Mrs. J. Hollin Kefauver, 1 for Mis Katherine "Katie" Kefauver" 1 for Miss mary Kefauver and 1 for Miss Margaret (Maggie) Kefauver. The rest of the 51 are all different first names. If you would like, I can either copy the entries and snail-mail them to you, or I can fax them to you. It is way too much to transcribe into an e-mail. Please let me know. Thanks, Donna Rae > Thanks, Donna Rae, for being willing to do these lookups. 1. Re: [MDWASHIN] York Co. Pa- Rumel
    2. I couldn't find a Jacob Rumel/Rummel - but I did find this in the "Early German Settlers of York Co., PA (Revised Edition)" under Manchester Township... pg. 270 (Under the familly listing for Uhler) "Johan Adam, b. on Feb. 14, 1743 and bapt. at Christ's Lutheran on Feb. 23, 1743. He m. Elisabeth, dau. of Michael Geisselman (see entry in Shrewsbury section), at Strayer's on Junee 24, 1766. Adam's probate inventory was dated 1770. They had the following children (Elisabeth m. Frederick Rumel at Strayer's on Apr. 4, 1771, after Adam's death) (Adam and Elisabeth were sponsors to the baptism of Anna Barbara Meyer at Wolf's in June (1769)." I'm sorry I couldn't find what you were looking for, but maybe this may help sometime in the future.
