I have request to make. I was wondering if someone would please lookup information for me on the following family lines. I am trying to determine children of said parties. This is the information I have thus far: I am trying to determine who the parents are to my Mary J. JACQUES who married John EVERHART. John EVERHART was born 1791 in Middletown, Maryland. Mary had two sisters, Amanda JACQUES and Esther JACQUES and believe she also had a brother. If someone could help me out it would greatly be appreciated. Gwen There are three grooms in the Washington County marriage index covering 1799-1860: JACQUES, Arthur/Sr. LOWE 3/7/1812 Lancelot Jr./Mary BOWMAN 6/2/1812 Lancelot/Polly McCOY 3/18/1846 There are eight brides listed: Catherine, Catherine R., Elizabeth, Eliza, Louisa, Margaret, Nanny and Sarah. I'll look them up if any of them are yours. In Estate Distributions 1778-1835 are these entries: JACQUES, Thomas. Adm. Anthony. 2/14/1807; widow, 1 heir. T. 65.12.7 [pounds, shillings, pence] also Ann JACQUES is an administrator and an heir to the estate of Moses R. HURST in 1815; in newspaper extractions Ann and Lancelot are administrators for Joseph HURST in 1807. Lancelot JACQUES held an inheritance in trust for one woman's children and served as administrator to two other estates. In F. Edward Wright's Western Maryland Newspaper Extractions 1799-1805 there are references to Jacques Iron Works and Jacques Furnace In 1801 Denton JACQUES is listed in a group of people owing taxes in Allegany County. Incidentally the spelling JACKES is interchanged with JACQUES and Denton never picked up his mail! In 1799 Lancelot JACQUES offered a 162 acre farm on Potomoc 2 miles from Hancock Town. He lived a couple miles from there. Lancelot was active in politics in the early 1800s and was appointed Justice of the Peace in Washington County in 1803; also in 1814. Other volumes of extractions indicate Lancelot's daughter Elizabeth married George I. BREWER in March of 1830. The Maryland Advocate published in Cumberland Md. Nov. 10, 1827 "Died Mon 26th Oct. last at his res near Hancock, Wash co Md, Dr. Lancelot JACQUES aged about 72 years. In Vol. III of the cemetery records for Wash Co there are three JACQUES (including a Lancelot.) burials in Smithsburg Cemetery at Smithsburg, MD. In Vol. II there is a Denton JACQUES and wife Julia buried in St. Peters Evangelical Lutheran Churchyard Cemetery at Clearspring.
Hello, I would like to know the names and locations of any cemeteries around Cavetown that would have been there around 1830? I already know about the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church cemetery in Smithsburg. Is that the only location nearby? Thanks Nicky
It seems to me that I saw a book on the Steffy family in the "Western Maryland Room" of the public library in Hagerstown, MD. .............Larry ************************************** On Tue, 29 Mar 2005 00:12:27 EST BSpain8301@aol.com writes: > Am interested in corresponding with you - I have a George Shaffer > 1803-1890 > who married a Steffy 1807-1886 - unsure of her first name. I have an earlier Shaffer family in Washington County - Theobald Shaffer who married Susanna Margaretha Kissinger of Hagerstown in 1751. I don't have children for them in my database but if anyone else has more information - please let me know. Susanna Kissinger is the sister of my ancestor Margaretha Gessinger. They had a brother named George so there may be a connection to this line. I am trying to locate information on George H. SHAFFER, born about 1868, son of George V. SHEAFFER/SHAFFER, and Caroline C. STEFFY. George H. is listed in Caroline's obituary in Dec 1921 as living in Hagerstown, MD. Is anyone on the list connected with this family? Roger, I have noticed your posts to this list many times in the past, and they seem to be very well researched. You are searching in two counties I am interested in because there are FOSNOT families(of many spellings) in both. Many of the descendants of John Fausnaught(d. 1806 in Benevola, MD) moved to Fairfield Co, OH, but some remained in Washington County, MD. My knowledge of those who remained is incomplete. Do you have any info on FAUSNAUGHT families in Washington County that you can share? In the post below, you show that you have much detailed info on Ogle Co, IL families, including Guy Chester FOSNOT. Do you have any other FOSNOT info from Ogle Co, IL? If you have any FOSNOT info from anywhere else, I would like to add it to my files also. This surname is spelled so many ways, and so badly mis-spelled, that I have been maintaining four separate files in order to sort them out into the families of the three FASSNACHT immigrants of 1749 and 1750. Garfield, Md. is in Frederick County, Md
Thanks! We know about these and Howard Clem - the fellow who I'm helping [who doesn't have internet access] already has a copy of these books. There are several CLEMs in these books that could be the ones who he's looking for - but Dee provided no information [as far as dates, places, etc. - or further info] on these fellows. I'm presuming that the two volume series that I found on the internet which were published by the Tennesee Valley Publishing of Knoxville, Tennesee by "Deloris Kitchel Clem" is the same as you listed below? Do you know? Thanks again for replying! Donna, Regarding Lauren's post of marriages, NICELY, MYERS, & GRAY are Shenandoah names connected to the CLEM families in Powels Big Fort area of the county. Passage Creek cuts through the middle of this valley running north to south. Powel's Fort is not a fort, it is a valley. It is called that because it provided protection from attach with a mountain range on both sides. The valley is narrow and long and this is where the CLEMS lived. http://www.rootsweb.com/~vashenan/vashenan.html If you go to this site, and put the above names in the search engine it will bring up some old documents (1760-1780) that mentioned their association. There is alot of information on the site concerning CLEMS. The site has an article on the DANIEL B. CLEM HOME which sold 8 November 1887 to JOHN A. G. CLEM & SARAH C. CLEM & GEORGE A. G. CLEM. The home was one of the oldest in Powel's Big Fort and was located 3 miles south of Detrick, Virginia on Route 74. Chocy
Nicley also spelled Knisley/Kneisley - has connections. ----- Original Message ----- From: <Chocybrown@aol.com> To: <MDWASHIN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, March 25, 2005 7:54 PM Subject: Re: [MDWASHIN] CLEM - CLEMM > Donna, > Regarding Lauren's post of marriages, NICELY, MYERS, & GRAY are > Shenandoah names connected to the CLEM families in Powels Big Fort area of > the > county. Donna, There are five CLEM marriages in the Frederick County MD Marriage Licenses from 1778-1810 which is much earlier than when you're looking. These are all marriages into families with German surnames - Shook, Durst, Stimmell, Umbaugh, etc. and they run from 1799-1809. Let me know if you want them. In 1826 there is a marriage in Washington County between John GRAY and Miss Mary CLAM. In the groom's index there is one CLEM marriage - Luke/Susan MYERS 7/12/1855. Abraham NICELY/Sarah CLEM 12/26/1859 There is also an Elizabeth CLUM marriage listed in 1806. The index of marriage licenses only goes to 1860. I found a few traces, but most of my resources are earlier than the period you're looking at.
