Thanks very much to those who responded about my quest for a Death Cert. for < $25.00 . Perhaps some more info on whom I’m searching for will prove useful. I am searching for info on the parents of Jacob and Maria A. Stine. The MD archives lists a death index card for Maria, but not Jacob. 1) Jacob Stine b. 15 Dec 1819 [tombstone record] d. 21 Feb 1899 bu. Jefferson Union Cemetery. Frederick Co. 2) Maria A. Stine b. 16 June 1819 [cemetery record] d. 16 Apr 1905 bu. Church of Brethren Graveyard, Brownsville, Washington Co. Maria m. James W. Holmes ~1854 and he died 31 Dec 1881 bu. same cemetery. Death Index Card for Maria Holmes says she died 16 Apr. 1905 Washington Co. at age 86 [so born 1819.] I have the Will of Philip Stine/Stein b. ~1790 [probably Washington Co.] and d. 24 Jun 1857 in Frederick Co., which lists Jacob Stine/Stein and Maria Holmes as his children, along with Rosanna, Mary Jane, Huldah, Sarah Catherine, Harriet and Susanna R. I am certain Philip is the father. However, the only marriage record I can find is to a Sophia Smith with a date of 4 May 1820 which is AFTER Jacob and Maria were born. Either both death records of Jacob and Maria are incorrect, or Philip could have been married to someone else before Sophia. Help from anyone who can shed light on Jacob or Maria’s mother would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Jim Jacob m. Sarah Shaff 26 Oct 1856 Maria m. James W. Holmes abt 1854 Rosanna m. Adison Darr/Derr 29 Mar 1851 Mary Jane – not sure if she married Huldah/Holda never married Sarah Catherine m. Jonathon H. Himes 14 Aug 1860 Harriet – never married Susanna R. m. Jim My experience on researching in Maryland has always led me to the $25. I was told that if a historical society has it you might get it for less and if you have to go through the Maryland archives it could end up costing more with their fees but dept of vital records offers only one option and it's $25. Hope that helps Tracy On Mar 10, 2012, at 7:36 PM, "Jim Bartholomew" <[email protected]> wrote: > Is there a way to get a 1905 non-certified [genealogical purpose] Washington Co. death certificate for less than the $25.00 certified copy? Jim: Sometimes if another family member has previously obtained a copy of said death certificate they will share a copy. Perhaps if you ask about the person you are researching someone also researching that lineage will contact you. Is there a way to get a 1905 non-certified [genealogical purpose] Washington Co. death certificate for less than the $25.00 certified copy? Thanks for any help, Jim
There was some interest earlier this week in being able to search MD death records. The following link describes what death records are available in MD, and how to obtain them. More importantly, you can browse the index to see if one is available for your particular person of interest. They range from 1898-1944 except for Baltimore City which is 1875-1972 Happy hunting, Jim http://mdvitalrec.net/cfm/index.cfm At left, click on Search MD Vital Records

God bless you. Thank you so much more than I can put into words. Most have said because they could not find her obit on the library website it did not appear. I knew it had, another family member had it and lost it. There are several that do not appear on the library list, perhaps just overlooked. Thank you. Well, good grief, I decided to search Worldvitalrecords just for Selby 1936 and found it! Hagerstown Morning Herald, 22 Dec 1936 p. 16: Mrs. Margaret E. Selby died on Monday evening at 7 o'clock at her home, 410 West Franklin street, aged 71 years. She is survived by two sons, Charles, Wisconsin, and Lewis Selby, near New Alexander, Pa.; one daughter, Mrs. Anna Mas, Baltimore. The body was removed to the Kraiss Mortuary Chapel from where funeral services will be held on Thursday afternoon at 3 o'clock by the Rev. G.I. Rider; interment in Rose Hill Cemetery. I'd suggest you write Rose Hill and see if there is any additional information about her in their records. Unfortunately, not a very informative obit, but ... for what it's worth. Sam P.S. This just goes to show that one should never rely solely on printed, secondary sources, but always at some point search original records. Hi, I checked in genealogybank.com and worldvitalrecords.com and there were no matches for a Margaret Selby 1936 obit in Maryland (or elsewhere). Worldvitalrecords does cover Hagerstown newspapers. If someone has an Ancestry membership, perhaps he can search there for you.
