Patty, The Hardesty children are shown in the 1850 Census: 1850 United States Federal Census about Mary A Higgs Name: Mary A Higgs Age: 42 Birth Year: abt 1808 Birthplace: St Mary's Co Home in 1850: District 3, St Mary's, Maryland Gender: Female Family Number: 144 Household Members: Name Age Alexander Higgs 63 Mary A Higgs 42 James R Hardisty 12 Joseph T Hardisty 10 Mary J Hardisty 7 Richard J Hardisty 6 I just looked at the original document and their is a transscription error on the abstact above.... here is the correct list of children as I now have them. James R(obert) Hadesty Joseph F(rank) Hardesty Mary J(ane) Hardesty Richard T(homas) Hardesty Mary Ann Dean married Joseph Hardesty 16 Jan 1832. She then married Alexander Higgs 26 Jan 1847. The 1860 census document shows a Jno F. Higgs - 21 years old. So, he was born about 1838/39. This really could be Joseph Frank Hardesty and in all likelyhood is and there was an error in the 1860 census document. I've seen this many times. I had placed the John F. Higss from the 1860 census as the son of Alexander and Eleanor because of his age. Now that I have looked at it more closely, I do believe he is really Joseph Frank Hadesty and have made that change. The 1860 census also shows a Joe Higgs, 12 years old. The problem I have with placing him as the son of Alexander Higgs and Mary Dean is that the census record shows him as a black male. I do not have anything on the Hardesty children other than a note for Mary Jane's death, 1832 Wahington DC. At the time of the 1850 census he was living with his presumed half-sister, Susanna (Hardesty) Higgs, wife of John Calvert Higgs, and daughter of Joseph Higgs by his second wife, Eliza Mattingly. I have Joseph Hardesty married three times. Much of this is cobbled together and proof is lacking. It's what I think vs. what I can prove. Descendants of Joseph Hardesty Generation No. 1 1. Briscoe. Application of Alexander Higgs, Sr., res. of St. Mary's Co., next friend of James Robert Hardesty whose age was 15 years on 5 July last; also Mary Jane Hardesty whose age was 12 years on 15 November last; and Richard Thomas Hardesty whose age was 9 years on 14 Feb last; these are the minor children of Joseph Hardesty who died about 31 December 1845, leaving a widow who intermarried with said Alexander Higgs, Sr., and is still a married woman. Acquaintances: Alexader Higgs, Jr. and Leonard T. Boot (should be Booth), residents of St. Mary's County. (Maryland Militia, War of 1812, Vol. 5, St. Mary's and Charles Counties by F.
