    2. i. NANCY ANN9 SPALDING, b. February 08, 1771, St. Mary's County, Maryland; d. January 26, 1863, Marion County, Kentucky; m. UNKNOWN HAMILTON. She married Clement HAMILTON son of Leonard HAMILTON and Nancy McAtee Washington Co Ky Wills 1792-1853, (Sanders) Leonard Hamilton - Will - W: 28 Aug 1819, P: 13 Sep 1819 Leg: Daughters: Elizabeth Lucket, Harriet Thurman, Ann Bloom, Martha Janes, (James?) daughter Stacy's heirs Sons: Clement, Leonard and Samuel Ex: Sons, Leonard & Samuel Wit: Aaron Spalding, William McAfee (sic) Signed: Leonard Hamilton Hamilton, Leonard http://www.kv.k12.in.us/rdmhome/mcatee/index.html LEONARD HAMILTON and his wife, Nancy McAtee, were founders of one of the early Hamilton families of Washington County, KY With their children, several grown or nearly so, a few relatives and some neighbors, they left Charles Co., MD for Kentucky in the late spring of 1790. Leonard, his family, and many of the others settled on the Rolling Fork; he was reported as a taxable with 600 acres in 1792. When Leonard, a "middling planter," left his Charles County home in the Old Port Tobacco area of Maryland he had over 200 well worn acres, but like most of those who joined this exodus to Kentucky, he hoped to improve the social and economic circumstances of his family, which included more and better land. Leonard, born in the mid or late 1740's, probably at "Spy Park" the old Hamilton home place, was the oldest son of Patrick Hamilton, one of the children of Alexander and Elizabeth. Through his mother, Ann Green, Leonard was descended from Thomas Greene, who arrived on the Ark and Dove and became a prominent official and, for a time, governor of Lord Baltimore's palatinate. (See also "Thomas Hamilton" for more family background). At the time he died in 1819, nine of his 11 children, four sons and five of his seven daughters, were still living and mentioned in his will. Of his four sons Clement, the oldest, married Ann ("Nancy") SPALDING, had a large family and became a prominent farmer in Washington (later Marion) County. Leonard's second oldest son, George A. Hamilton, married Claire Fenwick, joined his father in law, Joseph Fenwick, in 1797 in his colonizing venture in the St. Genevieve District of Upper Louisiana (then under Spanish control, later Perry County). He became a large landowner on Brazeau Creek at its confluence with the Mississippi across from the old French settlement at Kaskaskia. Three of George's five children became noteworthy in the annals of the Catholic Church: George Alexander Hamilton (Jr.) as a prominent priest of the diocese of Boston: his two daughters as pioneering nuns with the Ladies of the Sacred Heart. Two of George's three sons married and had children. The third son of Leonard Hamilton was Leonard, Jr. who married a Beaven. When he, along with Joseph Ford, died in the disaster of the steamboat Brandywine on April 9, 1832, in the Mississippi above Memphis, he was returning from a business trip to New Orleans. His death orphaned eight children, four sons and four daughters. One of his sons was the other of two well known priests named George Alexander Hamilton (they were first cousins) who is buried in the crypt under the high alter in St Mary's Cathedral in Lafayette, IN. Samuel, the fourth son, of Leonard Hamilton, Sr., who married Deborah Thomas, died a few years after his father. He left two or three children, one daughter and one or two sons. Samuel's progeny are found first in the records of Washington County and later in those of Nelson County. The seven daughters of Leonard Hamilton, Sr., with the names of their husbands and dates of marriage are as follows: Elizabeth, married first in 1791 to Thomas McAtee and secondly in 1799 to Henry Luckett; Martha married in 1796 to William James; Anastasia ("Stacy") married in 1797 to Ignatius HAGAN; Henrietta married in 1801 to Richard SPALDING (as his first wife); Harriett married in 1802 to Livingston J. Thurman; Mary married in 1805 to Benedict J. SPALDING; Ann ("Nancy") married first in 1806 to Jeremiah K. Knott (killed by retreating British while on guard duty after the Battle of New Orleans), secondly married Charles Bland in 1817. The two daughters of Leonard who married Spaldings were mothers of children who became prominent as nuns, priests and prelates in the Catholic church. Henrietta was the mother of Martin J. SPALDING, notable as the Archbishop of Baltimore. There are numerous progeny "of Leonard" in both patrilineal and matrilineal lines that today has spread far beyond the borders of old Washington Marion County. Many of them still look upon this area as their ancestral Kentucky homeland. Submitted by Lamar Hamilton.
