    3. RE: Robert Cole (c1628-c1663 MD) who married REBECCA, the widow of Francis Knott of England, mother of their two children, Ann (bc1646) and Francis II (c1648), who immigrated to Maryland abt. 1652: Has it been proven that this Rebecca was GILL, the daughter of Benjamin Gill (bc1582-87) who m. Mary Mainwaring? I have this REBECCA unproved as Benjamin's daughter; the only proved daughter was Anna Maria Gill (bc1617) who married Capt. James Neale of Wollaston Manor, Charles County MD. The reason Robert Cole appears on Benjamin GILL's will/probate is this connection, in my file from Linda Reno (don't know the date of that email): "The connection between Robert Cole and Benjamin Gill was that Cole's mother and Gill's wife were sisters, both being daughters of Oliver Mainwaring (d. testate 1631) of Windleshaw (in Prescot), Lancashire and his wife Margaret Torbock. Jane Mainwaring had married by 1615 to Thomas Cole, yeoman, of Heston, a younger son of Robert Cole (d. 1614-15) of Heston and his wife Alice. Mary Mainwaring had married by 1622 to Benjamin Gill, chandler, of St. Andrew Holborn, London. In 1622 Benjamin Gill, his wife Mary, and Jane wife of Thomas Cole appeared on the same roll as convicted recusants in Middlesex. The royal ancestry for these individuals through their mother and grandmother Margaret Torbock can be followed in Mr. Douglas Richardson's Plantagenet Ancestry (2004), pp. 490-491." LINDA RENO, Maryland Is this still correct? I descend from this Robert COLE and Rebecca UNKNOWN Knott Cole through their son, Edward Cole (Nov 1657-c1717), mentioned in his father Robert's will of 1662 St. Mary's County, with his other children, Robert [Jr], Mary, William, and Elizabeth; also, my "sonn in law Francis Knott" [step-son?]. Edward Cole married Honora Ford, parents to RUTH who married Thomas Mattingly III abt 1715. Is this information still valid? I thank you all - Marcia -----Original Message----- From: mdstmary-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:mdstmary-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of mdstmary-request@rootsweb.com Sent: Thursday, February 14, 2013 2:00 AM To: mdstmary@rootsweb.com Subject: MDSTMARY Digest, Vol 8, Issue 66 Today's Topics: 1. I believe that Robert Cole married Elizabeth Tant, not Elizabeth Herbert. 12/1/1724: Admin. accts. of John Tant, SMC. Payments to (among others): Mr. Robert Ford who married the widow and Exec. of Mr. James Tant. Legatees: Mrs. Mary Tant (left her by her father, dec'd); Ann Tant; Mr. Thomas Thompson and his wife; Elizabeth Cole; Winifred Herbert; Margaret Tant; Eleanor Deacon. Exec.: Margaret Tant (also Mrs. Mary Tant). Note that this time she's called Elizabeth Cole. Colonial Settlers of St. Clement's Bay by Mary Louise Donnelly states that Elizabeth Herbert was the daughter of Matthew Herbert and Grace Hayden and that she married first, Robert Cole and second, James Thompson. She states that James Thompson and his wife Elizabeth administered the estate of Robert Cole in 1722. NOTE: This is incorrect. Elizabeth Herbert, dau. of Matthew and Grace, was under the age of 21 and was single in 1750 at the time of the will of her brother, William Herbert. Vitus Herbert (who m. Winifred Tant, sister of Elizabeth) was one of the witnesses to the will of Robert Cole in 1720.
