Now for an update on her parents. Some time ago (see below) Linda checked at the St. Mary's county courthouse and discovered that a published record stated that a will was that of Henry Assiter. Actually when she checked she found that that particular will was that of Ann Assiter. In it Ann Assiter referenced her greandaughter Ann Payne d/o Henry Payne and Mary Assiter. Given the association between Charles Payne and John Drury I have assumed that John probably married Charles' sister Ann Payne shortly after 1695 when she was still listed as single in her grandmother's will. If they were married it would make sense that one of their female children would be named Ann. Hope this helps. Ann received a bequest in the 1695 will of her grandmother Anne Assiter that established her existence. She then becomes the only daughter of Henry Payne not assigned a spouse. Since John Drury was living on land owned by the Payne family it seems logical that he would be married to a Payne daughter. 9/15/2012 Henry Payne and Mary Assiter did have a daughter Ann Payne who is mentioned in her grandmother’s Will. [Will of Ann Assiter, SMC 11/4/1693-3/20/1693-4. Note by Linda Reno a St. Mary's County genealogist and researcher concerning this will - Maryland Calendar of Wills says it is Henry Assiter. I called and had the will pulled at the (St. Mary’s County) courthouse to verify the name. It is the will of Ann Assiter. I should have gone further and gotten a copy of the will. That needs to happen. If the transcriber messed up the name of the testator, other things may have also been missed, specifically the mention of Ann Paine. First of all about Rachel Payne: My notes--Rachel Payne was assumed to be the wife of John Drury s/o Robert (immigrant) due to the following (see “Beaverdam Manor” pp 96,97. Also see “Colonial Settlers St. Clement’s Bay” pp187,188): from (inv 39c:187) Will of Charles Payne 12/11/1717 lists John Drury now living on “Howard’s Mount” as next of kin. Will of Thomas Payne (1731) lists John Drury s/o John (d. 1724) as next of kin. John Drury's 2nd wife Mary Ford was established from his Admin Accts dtd 2 June 1724 where she is listed as executrix. However, Charles Payne is not known to have a sister named Rachel. There's no proof but it is plausible. It is evident from the admin accts of Francis Hayden that he had a wife named Elizabeth who married Sebastian Thompson. ***************************** Admin Accts. of Francis Hayden rendered 4/4/1749 lists Sebastian and Elizabeth Thompson as administrators of the estate.
