    3. List, I need to weigh in on this one. Again, let's correct these names and dates, if needed. The Spaldings and Mattinglys are well-documented lines, their descendants settling in Nelson/Washington/Marion counties of KY, pioneers of the Maryland League. Benedict Joseph SPALDING JR (1746-1815 KY) married Alethaire (Alethea) ABELL (1753-1821 KY), the daughter of Samuel Abell (c1719-1777 MD) and Eleanor Bryan (c1720-aft 1777 MD, presumed daughter of William Bryan). This couple has been used numerous times for DAR/SAR applications. They are my 4th great-grandparents. Benedict Joseph SPALDING SR (c1716-1768 MD) married Elizabeth MATTINGLY bef. 1746. She was daughter of Thomas Mattingly III (c1690-1774 MD) and Ruth Cole (c1698-bef 1774). (5th great-grandparents) Thomas Mattingly I (c1623-1664 MD) was the immigrant from England. Benedict Joseph Spalding was the grand-son of Thomas Spalding (c1640-c1713 MD) , immigrant from England. Both in St. Mary's County MD area. Benedict J. Spalding JR and Alethaire had a son, Benedict J. III, nicknamed "Ben Slick". Born Jun 1783-died Feb 1870 in Marion County KY. He married three times: Mary "Nancy" Hamilton; Elizabeth Elder; and Eliza McElroy. I have no children listed. There are many descendants of this couple, Benedict Joseph Spalding JR and Alethaire Abell, in KY, including: Hamilton, Simms, Abell, Lancaster, Wathen, Beaven, on and on. Much has been documented, but data from records and personal family trees does get tangled sometimes. And, the additional name "Joseph" is not always adopted, or recorded consistently, through the lines of descent. Hope this helps. 3. All these people with the same name. In a previous message I identfied Alethaire Alethea Abell as b. 22 April 1764 ( MD Births & Christenings 1662-1911). d/o Rich"d Spalding & Ann. WRONG she would have been too young to marry in 1770. Alethaire A. Abell b. 1753 SMC d. 1 Dec 1821, Washington Co., KY d/o Samuel Abell & Eleanor O'Bryan appears to be one that m. Benedict Joseph Spalding 1746-1815 I have serious problems on which child married Who. Richard Spalding married in Washington Co., KY Nancy Taylor 17 Nov 1798 Henrietta Hamilton 28 Jul 1801 Tabitha Edwards 8 Jul 1805 Henny Thompson 17 Jan 1817 Mary Montgomery 15 Nov 1825 Mrs Mary Adams 15 Feb 1827 ( this is a married name, what was her maiden name?) These 6 marriages are on FTM CD # 229 Marriage Index. Joseph Spalding ha 4 marriages Benedict Jr. had 3 Some separation is easy but others I am not sure. If Eliza Beavins had a brother in-law Lewis Ignatius Spalding then she did not marry the Benedict in the Washington Co. Will of Benedict 1746-1815 as this Ignatius was Ignatius Aloysius. I do not know who inherited the bible and never saw it myself, but believe it existed. I can not verify the accuracy of this transcript either. I haven't had time to check it all, but have verified some of it with early Holy Name of Mary Baptismal records. My family lines are Abell, Hamilton and Mills. In Maryland Records I find a Benedict Spalding b. 1798 d. 16 Feb 1832 SMC m 29 Sep 1819 Alethea Greenwell. I have not found him with middle name Joseph? A Benedict Joseph Spalding b. 1720- 1769 m. Elizabeth Mattingly 1746 SMC. Their son Benedict Spalding, Jr. b. Dec 1746, Calvert Co., MD d. 1 or 6 Aug 1815 Washington Co., KY m. Alethea(various spellings) Abell 1770.She was b. 22 Apr 1764 St. Andrews Parish, St. Marys Co., MD ( per Maryland Births & Christenings 1662-1911) & d. 1 Dec 1821, Washington Co., KY d/o Richard Abell & Ann. Above backed up by Find A Grave & by Family Data Collection.Sons of American Revolution Applications have varying dates. They had a son that shows as Benedict Joseph Spalding, III on some records b. 10 Jun 1783, SMC d. 25 Feb 1870 Marion Co., KY but marriage index in Washington Co., KY shows him as Benedict Spalding, Jr, in 3 marriage records Polly Hamilton, 16 Jan 1805, Eliza Elder 16 Jan 1815, & Eliza A. Beavin 7 Nov 1832. I also found listed as a brother Joseph Spalding with 4 possible marriages in Washington Co. Would they have named a son Joseph if they had Benedict Joseph?? There was a Benedict A. Spalding in Washington Co. married in 1821. Also Benedict J. Spalding in Union Co., KY m. in 1842.
