Hello all. I'm going to chime in because the "John Basil Thompsons" are my ancestors. Anyway, what I am about to detail is meant to be thought-provoking--but not fact. Please take it as educated speculation and not truth. However, I believe it makes sense: Maria Thompson who married Charles Martin was, according to Linda, daughter of James Thompson "of Basil" and Winifred Drury. Note that there were a number of contemporaneous "Maria Thompsons" living in SMC at the time and there is no clear evidence which one married Charles Martin. James Thompson "of Basil" (b. circa 1776-77 and d. 3/14/1836 in SMC--son of John Basil Thompson I and his first wife, Sarah _________) married (ML 12/23/1805 in SMC) WINIFRED DRURY (b. 4/1/1777 and d. 2/17/1856 in SMC--she is buried at St. John's RCC in Morganza, SMC--daughter of ENOCH DRURY and TABITHA WIMSATT) and they had, at least, the following children: 1) Maria Thompson (b. bet. 1806 and 1810 and d. bet. 1845 and 1850--above); 2) Elizabeth Thompson (b. 1816 and d. after 1860--she married (as his second wife--ML 5/30/1852 in SMC) Charles Martin (b. 1801 and d. bef. 11/12/1856)); 3) John B. (probably Basil) Thompson (b. 1813 and d. 1855 in SMC--he married (1) Mary Louise Tarlton and (2) Ann Maria Bean); 4) probably another son (see Federal Census records below)--possibly either the James Thompson who was the godfather of John William Raley (son of John B. Raley and his second, wife, Ann Thompson--the first wife of John B. Raley was one of the several contemporaneous Maria Thompsons) in 1834 in SMC or one of the contemporaneous man named "George Thompson"); 5) Possibly Susanna Thompson (who, if she existed, married (in 1838 in SMC) Aloysius Cusic--however, she doesn't seem to have been named in any of the Federal Census records relating to this family). At the time of the Federal Census of 1810, James Thompson "of Basil" had the following individuals living in his household: 1 male between the ages of 26 and 44 (that is, born between 1764 and 1784)--this would have been James Thompson of Basil); 1 female between the ages of 10 and 15 (that is, born between 1795 and 1800)--I am not sure who this would have been; 1 female between the ages of 26 and 44 (that is, born between 1764 and 1784)--this would have been Winifred (Drury) Thompson. At the time of the Federal Census of 1820, James Thompson "of Basil" had the following individuals living in his household: 2 males under the age of 10 (that is, born between 1810 and 1820)--I assume one of these boys had to have been John B. ("Basil"?) Thompson (b. 1813); 1 female under the age of 10 (that is, born between 1810 and 1820)--this would have been Elizabeth Thompson; 1 female between the ages of 10 and 15 (that is, born between 1805 and 1810)--this would have been Maria Thompson; 1 female over 45 years of age (that is, born before 1775)--this would have been Winifred (Drury) Thompson. At the time of the Federal Census of 1840, James Thompson "of Basil" lived in the 3rd Election Disctrict in SMC and had the following individuals living in his household: 1 male between the ages of 60 and 70 (that is, born between 1770 and 1780)--this would have been James Thompson of Basil; 1 female under the age of 5 (that is, born between 1835 and 1840--possibly a granddaughter); 1 female between the ages of 20 and 30 (that is, born between 1810 and 1820)--this would have been Elizabeth Thompson; 1 female between the ages of 60 and 70 (that is, born between 1770 and 1780)--this would have been Winifred (Drury) Thompson. James Thompson "of Basil" received a pensio (applied for in 1850) for service during the War of 1812. John B. ("Basil"?) Thompson (b. 1813 and d. 3/14/1846--son of James Thompson of Basil and Winifred Drury married (ML 11/11/1839 in SMC) Mary Louise Tarlton (b. 4/2/1819 and d. 9/9/1844 in SMC--daughter of Rodolph ("Rhody") Tarlton and Sarah Combs) and they had, at least, the following children: 1) James Rodolphus Thompson (b. in December of 1840 and d. 12/14/1918--he married Sarah Jane Bean (b. 1824 and d. 1880 in SMC--daughter of William Bean II and Mary Combs)). It is probably relevant that James Rodolphus Thompson (above) was associated with Judge Samuel Chapman Thompson in SMC records. Remember the name "SAMUEL CHAPMAN Thompson." After the death of Mary Louise (Tarlton) Thompson, John B. ("Basil"?) Thompson (son of James Thompson of Basil and Winifred Drury) married (2--ML 2/3/1845 in SMC) Ann Maria Bean (daughter of William Bean I (d. circa 8/15/1830 in SMC) and Mary Combs (d. 1854 in SMC)) and they had, at least, the following children: 2) Maria Indiana Thompson (b. 1848--according to some reserchers, she married George Tarlton); 3) Alice Virginia Thompson (b. in March of 1850--she married James Benedict Thompson (who were his parents?)); 4) Clement C. Thompson (b. 1852 and living in 1860). James Rodolphus THompson (b. in December of 1840 and d. 1918 in SMC--son of John B. ("Basil"?) Thompson and Mary Louise Tarlton) married Amanda Elizabeth ("Mandy") MdKay (b. 1842 and d. 1882 in SMC) and they had, at least, the following childrenL 1) Louisa Jane Thompson (b. 5/21/1866 and d. 1926--she married (John Francis Armsworthy (b. in February of 1849 and d. 10/28/1912) and (2) Asher H. Townsend (b. 1847)); 2) Virginia A. Thompson (b. in March of 1870 and d. 1897 in SMC); 3) Benjamin "Barzillar" (a variant of "Basil") Thompson (b. 1872 and d. 1893--he married Mary Catherine Pilkerton (b. 1874 and d. 1920)); 4) Mary Alice Thompson (b. in August of 1875 and d. 1926--she married William Albert Wood (b. in December of 1874)); 5) Clyde R. Thompson (b. 1882 and d. 1910--he married Mary Catherine (Pilkerton) Thompson (Widow of his brother)).
