    3. Another interesting tidbit about the Edwards boys.... Capt. William Henry Edwards from Chester County, SC, wrote a number of books/stories which were published ca. 1908 and on. Most of his stories were about the civil war and the Regiment he commanded. In one of his stories he states: "John Edwards, Joseph Edwards and Stourton Edwards, three brothers, came to Edgecomb Co, N.C.. John and Joseph settled in Chester Co., S.C. Stourton, the other brother, settled on Taylor's Creek, in York Co." I believe that these are the sons of Joseph (d. 1794). They started a Ferry service on the Roanoke River where in 1863 at Edwards Ferry NC, the Ironclad CSS Albemarle was constructed durring the Civil War. 3. I have Thomas Edwards born probably around 1750 and died in Washington Co., KY in 1809 or 1810. He was the son of Joseph Edwards and had possession of Diamonds Venture in 1801. He too named a son Stourton and had grandsons also carrying the name. (This family also uses the name Dent over and over.) Josias Edwards called him cousin and the son of Joseph Edwards in his 1774 will. EDWARDS, JOSIAS, St Mary's Co. 15 Sept. 1774; 10 Nov. 1774 To bro. John Edwards, ex., plantation Taurlon Dean, 164 acres, tobacco, stock. To cousin Thomas Edwards son of Joseph Edwards, furniture. Residue of estate to brother John Edwards. Wit: John H. Briscoe; Thomas Nicholls; Mary Edwards. 40. 2 http://www.genealogytoday.com/columns/everyday/040607.html The word "cousin," for instance, was a general term used to refer to any relative outside the immediate family circle. Usually, it referred to a niece or nephew. The beginning researcher who encounters the word "cousin" in early documents and automatically thinks it has today's meaning may be making a mistake that could seriously confuse or distort his research. Thomas sold Diamond's Venture in 1801 probably readying himself for his move to Kentucky. Charles County gentry: a genealogical history of six emigrants - Thomas Dent ... By Harry Wright Newman During the Revolutionary War Hatch Dent served as a private in Captain Clarkson's Company of Charles County Militia. In 1801 he purchased 141 acres of Diamond's Venture from Thomas Edwards of St. Mary's County. Digest of Deeds, Liber 1, folio 272 The first record of Thomas Edwards paying taxes in Washington Co., KY was on 4/20/1803. Sons, Josiah and Stourton also paid taxes (for the first time in KY) that day and were over the age of 21. Thomas Edwards died between 6/27/1809 (when he paid taxes on 400 acres of land on the Waters of the Rolling Fork, 1 white male over 21, 2 blacks over 16, 8 total blacks and 4 horses) and 9/10/1810 when William Dickens is appointed guardian to Rhody, Thomas*, William and Charles Edwards (Washington Co. Court Order Book B, Page 131). *son Thomas died shortly after the death of Thomas Edwards Washington Co. KY Will Book B, Page 210 In obedience to an order for the county court for Washington County, to us directed, we have met, this 23rd day of December, 1812 and after being sworn, have proceeded to the division of the Estate of Thomas Edwards, Dec'd among the heirs ......each heir is entitled to 306.67 1/2 cents....... He came to Kentucky in 1794 (1802 or 1803) and brought his family with him all except Elkanah who was already married, and who remained near Cool Spring, same county." (Elkanah Edwards had married Elizabeth Chappelear on 12/19/1801 in SMC.) Who is Thomas Edwards if he is not the grandson of Joseph Edwards 1746 through his son, Joseph Edwards? Since Thomas was not a given name used in this Edwards family I have wondered if he was named for Thomas Suit?
