    1. [MDSTMARY] 2nd posting about Charles Martin and Maria (Thompson) Martin
    2. John Dobricky
    3. Hello again. Well, here is Part Two.....again, please remember this is educated speculation--not confirmed fact. Feedback always welcome. Some thoughts about the possible identity of the parents of Charles Martin who married both Maria Thompson and Elizabeth Thompson--see the mentions of him in earlier e-mails: First, with respect to the FATHER of Charles Martin.......I believe the father of Charles Martin almost had to have been a son of William Martin, "Jr.," and Ann ("Nancy") (Broome) Thompson (Widow of Benjamin Thompson (d. bet. 12/8/1777 and 3/24/1778 in SMC--son of John Thompson ("Joiner)). Benjamin Thompson I (b. circa 1750-55 and d. in SMC between 12/8/1777 and 3/24/1778--son of John Thompson ("Joiner")) married (before 1777 in SMC) Ann ("Nancy") Broome (daughter of Thomas Broome and Dorcas Godsgrace) and they had, at least, the following children: 1) Benjamin Thompson II (b. 1777-78). When Benjamin Thompson I (above) wrote his Will in SMC in 1777, he bequeathed everything to his wife, "Nancy" Thompson, and mentioned that she might have been "with child." The witnesses to the Will of Benjamin Thompson I in SMC in 1777 were John Thompson, "Sr.," William Fish, and "Jarrot" Fish. It is probably relevant that Benjamin Thompson I was godfather to the following children" a) James Drury (baptized on 12/10/1771 at St. FX RCC in SMC--son of James Drury, "Jr." (d. bef. 5/18/1779 in SMC) and his wife, Sarah (I believe, Thompson)); b) Thomas Drury (baptized on 7/17/1774 at St. FX RCC in SMC--son of James Drury, "Jr.," and his wife, Sarah (I believe, Thompson)). The godmother to both of the Drury boys was Catherine Drury--thought to have been the daughter of Philip Drury. After the death of Benjamin Thompson I, his Widow, Ann ("Nancy") (Broome) Thompson married (2--on 2/3/1780 at St. Andrew's (now Episcopal) Church in SMC) William Martin, "Jr." (b. 2/13/1759 and d. bet. 10/27/1806 and 12/9/1806 in SMC). In December of 1780, William Martin, "Jr.," was appointed Guardian to Benjamin Thompson II ("orphan of Benjamin Thompson deceased"). When he wrote his Will in SMC in 1806, William Martin, "Jr.," stated that "I have in my possession the property of the late Bennet [Benjamin] Thompson which was inherited by my children...." This indicates Benjamin Thompson II died between 1780 and 1806. William Martin, "Jr.," mentioned the following individuals in his Will: 1) his son, John H. B. (probably Hooper Broome) Martin; 2) his brother, Thomas Martin; 3) his daughters, "Darky" (probably Dorcas) (Martin) Bean (wife of William Bean I) and Rebecca (Martin) Broome (wife of Henry Broome); 4) his son, William Martin; 5) his daughter, Sarah Martin (b. 10/18/1790--she married (1--on 12/24/1816 in SMC) Robert Lilburn (d. in SMC between 5/2/1825 and 2/28/1832) and (2--in 1832 in SMC) William D. Biscoe); 6) his daughter, Ann ("Nancy") Martin; 7) His daughter, Mary Martin (she married (on 11/13/1818 in SMC) Benjamin Broome (b. 1753--son of John Broome and Mary Mackall)). The witnesses to the Will of William Martin, "Jr.," were Joseph Coad, Stephen Milburn, and Athanasius Fenwick. I have come to believe that a son of William Martin, "Jr.," and Ann ("Nancy") (Brome) Thompson married (as her first husband) Jane (I believe, Chapman--more about that later--b. circa 1780 and d. after 1818) and they had, at least, the following children: 1) Charles Martin (b. 1801--he married (in 1828 in SMC) Maria Thompson); 2) Mary Martin (b. circa 1800--she married (in 1818 in SMC) Martin Broome); 3) Jane Martin (b. circa 1800--she married (in 1818 in SMC) William Hebb). Jane (Chapman?) Martin was a congregant at St. FX RCC in SMC in 1803. I believe Jane (Chapman?) Martin married (2) Philip Cusic (possibly the brother of James Cusic (d. 1809 in SMC)) and they had, at least, the following children: a) Ann Cusic (she married (in 1833 in SMC) William Bond); b) Aloysius Cusic (he married (ML 4/24/1838 in SMC) Susanna Thompson--probably the individual who had been the godmother of John William Raley (b. 1834--son of John B. Raley and Ann Thompson)); c) Jane E. Cusic (she married (in 1831 in SMC) George W. Thompson (b. 1807 in SMC)); d) Charlotte Isabella Cusic (b. circa 1820--she married (in 1839 in SMC) James Thompson (b. 1818 in SMC--probably the individual who was the godfather of John William Raley (b. 1834--above)--they had, at least, a son, Harrison "Barsillai" (again, a version of Basil) Thompson (b. circa 1849)); e) Sarah ("Sally") Maria Cusic (d. between 9/3/1837 and 12/13/1837 in SMC); f) Susanna Cusic (she married (in 1848 in SMC) John Knott); g) Julianna Cusic (mentioned in the Will of Jane (Chapman?) Martin Cusic). Jane (Chapman?) Martin Cusic witnessed the Will of Henry Edley in SMC on 10/24/1814 (probated on 3/18/1825). Henry Edley (above) married (ML 6/26/1804 in SMC) Elizabeth Attaway Thompson (daughter of John B. (probably Baptist, in this case) Thompson and Mary Cissell). When Jane (Chapman?) Martin Cusic wrote her Will in SMC in 1837, the witnesses were Teresa (Spalding) Greenfield and Jane (Spalding Heard). Teresa Spalding (above) married (ML 1816 in SMC) George Greenfield. Jane Spalding (above) married (ML 1808 in SMC) Walter Heard. When the Estate of Jane (Chapman?) Martin Cusic was distributed by Charles Martin in SMC on 7/29/1840, the heirs were: 1) Ann (Cusic) Bond (wife of William Bond); 2) Aloysius Cusic; 3) Susanna Cusic; 4) "Julian" (Julianna) Cusic; 5) Charles Martin; 6) Jane E. Cusic. Aloysius Cusic (b. circa 1811 and d. 1850-52 in SMC--son of Philip Cusic and Jane (Chapman?) Martin) married Susanna Thompson (b. circa 1818 and d. 1850-52 in SMC--I believe, daughter of (some) George Thompson) and they had, at least, the following children: 1) Mary J. Cusic (b. 1842); 2) George Philip Cusic (b. 1849 and d. 4/23/1915 in SMC--he married Ann Cecelia Downs (b. 12/28/1874 and d. after 1920)); 3) James William Cusic (b. 1839 and d. 7/22/1899 in SMC--he married Margaret Ann Alvey (b. 1842 and d. 11/18/1922 in SMC--daughter of William Alvey and Ann ("Millie") Goodwin)). Jane E. Cusic (b. 1810 and living in 1860--daughter of Philip Cusic and Jane (Chapman?) Martin) married (on 2/9/1831 in SMC) George W. Thompson (b. 1807--probably the son of Joshua Thompson and Catherine Edley) and they had, at least, the following children: 1) (Judge) Samuel Chapman Thompson (b. 12/20/1835 and d. 10/25/1900 in SMC--he married (1--between 1860 and 1865 in SMC) Mary Jane Brewer (b. 1/8/1840 and d. 5/6/1891--daughter of Joseph William Brewer and his third wife, Cecelia Russell), (2--on 8/10/1892 in SMC) Mary Ellen (Floyd) Combs (daughter of Ferdinand Francis Floyd and Mary Wellington Davis--as well as Widow of Henry Combs)). Samuel Chapman Thompson and both of his wives are buried at St. John's RCC in SMC. On 1/30/1856, Samuel Chapman Thompson, George C. Tarlton, and John V. Wilkinson witnessed the Will of Mary (Brewer) Drury Hooper in SMC. At the time of the Federal Census of SMC in 1860, Samuel Chapman Thompson was living in the home of William B. Tucker in SMC. When Martin Van Buren Stone married (on 5/19/1862 in SMC) Mary Wilkinson, the witnesses were "Chapman" Thompson and Rudolph Thompson. More in a later e-mail about the parentage of Jane (Chapman?) Martin Cusic. John Dobricky e)
