If you want proof of James Gough's wife Elizabeth being married before him, see Maryland Chancery Court Records Liber 2, folio 751. In 1711 the boundary of Richard Vowles's dwelling plantation on St Clement's Bay was disputed. On 28 Sept 1711 two depositions were taken to help resolve this. John Nevitt, aged 70, describes the boundary of Vowles's "Redbudd Thickett" being next to "Rocky Point," both tracts had formerly belonged to his father Richard Nevitt according to this deposition. On the same day, Elizabeth Gough, aged 28, said she had formerly been the wife of George Medcalfe who possessed "Rocky Point," and gave a deposition regarding the land's boundary. The 1707 Rent Rolls show the owner of "Rocky Point" to be Samuel Davis, who had married George Medcalfe's widow, and that he had a life estate in the tract. The 1715 Rent Rolls show John Nevell (sic) Sr. to be possessor of the tract, and later that year he sold it as I mentioned in a previous post. I think she was actually Elizabeth Jarboe, dau. of John Jarboe, Jr. (d. 1705). She married first, George Medcalf between 1698 and 1702; second, Samuel Davis between 1702-1707; and third, James Gough by 1711. The will of John Jarboe, Jr. named his daughter Elizabeth, but he didn't give a surname, so it begs the question as to whether she was married or single. What got me back on this theory is the will of Henry Jarboe, Elizabeth's uncle and guardian. If you'll note, Henry named James Gough and Elizabeth Davis as two of the trustees of his estate during the minority of his children. In my opinion, this is Elizabeth (Jarboe ) Medcalf/Davis. I wouldn't doubt that Elizabeth wasn't already a widow at this point and it wasn't long after this will that she married James Gough. Will of Henry Jarboe, SMC, 3/18/1708-4/18/1709. Eldest son: Henry, dwelling plantation, 100 ac. Son: Peter, 100 ac. where Thomas Lowe, shoemaker, lives. Son: Charles, 100 ac. Son: Ignatius, 100 ac. Daughter: Mary, 50 ac. Daughter: Monica, 50 ac. All children, afsd., personalty. Should daughters die without issue, their estate to revert to Charles and Ignatius. Trustees during minority of children: Brother, Peter Joy; John Niles (should be Miles); James Gough; and Elizabeth Davis. Wit.: John Raley, Daniel Langhorn, Edward Howell, Mary Langhorn. I can't find any administration accounts for Samuel Davis anywhere. For a long time, I thought he might be the son of Thomas Davis and Mary Thomas, but that doesn't work as that Samuel Davis was living as late as 1719." Mary Yoder, Here are some other points you may have missed. William Medcalf m Susanna SMETH (SMITH), d/o Peter Jr & Dorothy (his will 30 Dec 1717 SMC, MD; his father Peter Smith bef 1640 & Hannah; has a son Peter III (had a son Peter IV); Sarah SMITH (m William HOWARD); Elizabeth SMITH m Robert Parsons; Mary SMITH m John Mecalf (no children). William Medcalf had a wife named Susanna, she wasn't Susanna Smith, dau. of Peter. And, now that I'm looking at all of that, I can't even swear she was Susanna Smith! There's nothing to tie this Susanna to Peter Smith as his daughter Susanna was single at the time of his will in 1717 and was still single in 1719. So, who was the Susanna? who married Wlliam MEDCALF His daughter m. first, John Baptist Buckman (this is a claim put forth by Donnelly and I've found no proof); second, John Bould, Jr.; and third, another William Medcalf (and I don't know who he is) between 1752-1754. The following is the proof of her second and third marriages: Admin. accts. of John Bould, SMC, 12/5/1753. Exec: Susanna Bould. 12/2/1754: Admin. accts. of John Bould, SMC. Exec: Susanna Bould, now wife of William Medcalf. And, now that I'm looking at all of that, I can't even swear she was Susanna Smith! There's nothing to tie this Susanna to Peter Smith as his daughter Susanna was single at the time of his will in 1717 and was still single in 1719. So, who was she? Linda Reno Will of Dorothy Smith, SMC, 1/3/1742-4/21/1743. To: Grandchildren, Henry, Ruth, Margaret, Michael, Henry, Joshua, and Susanna Winstread, and goddaughter, Ann Nevitt, personal estate. Exec.: Abraham Barnes. Wit.: George and Thomas Thompson, and Peter Mugg. NOTE: Testator desires to be buried by her husband, Thomas Roson (dec'd) and by codicil gives the past labor of her slaves to her son-in-law, Thomas Winstead. (Maryland Calendar of Wills). Linda Reno 11/4/03 She did have a daughter named Thomasine Roson by her first husband, Thomas Roson and Dorothy's will below names only her descendants by Thomasine. Linda Reno 11/4/03 The only legatees that Dorothy mentioned in her will in 1742 were the children of her daughter Thomasine, daughter by her first husband, Thomas Roson, who had married Thomas Winstead (Wimsatt?). Linda Reno 12/4/03 Admin. accts. of Thomas Winstead 4/2/1750 and 5/1/1750; appraisers were Thomas Graves, Jr. and John Booker; next of kin was Thomas Winstead and Henry Winstead, Jr.; Exec., Tomason Winsett (Skinner). Linda Reno 12/4/03 Second, Sarah Smith was the daughter of Peter Smith, but she wasn't the daughter of Dorothy Martin. I don't believe that Dorothy Martin had any children at all by Peter Smith. She did have a daughter named Thomasine Roson by her first husband, Thomas Roson and Dorothy's will below names only her descendants by Thomasine. Linda Reno 11/4/03 Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but this whole family needs to be taken apart and reconstructed. Dorothy ______(and there's no proof that she was the daughter of James Martin) was not the mother of the children of Peter Smith. Dorothy was married first to Thomas Roson and when she died (1743) her will named only her grandchildren--by her daughter Thomasine who married Thomas Winstead. If she'd had children by Peter Smith, surely she wouldn't have left them out. There's another hint that she's not their mother. The will of Peter Smith in 1717 says "Wife: Dorothy, personalty and use of dwelling plantation during life. No part of her estate to be claimed by Executor as belonging to testator, she having relinquished her dower rights." Sounds to me as if there had probably been a prenuptial agreement to protect Dorothy's estate. Linda Reno 3/16/05
