Wrong. Meverell Hulse had a son named Meverell but he married Elizabeth Villet, widow of Gabriel Moran. Mary Hulse, daughter of Meverell Hulse, Sr. m. Philip Locke and they were the parents of Meverell Locke (not Hulse) who m. Elizabeth Edwards. Elizabeth Edwards was the daughter of Joseph Edwards and his wife, Mary ____. Mary's surname was not Stourton. The name Stourton name came down through the Edwards family via Rev. Robert Stourton who had no children and asked that his godson, named for him, continue to carry the name Stourton and they certainly did that! But they kept it as a first or middle name, not a surname. Will of Robert Stourton, SMC, 12/4/1714-3/15/1714-15. Godson: Stourton Edwards and heirs, 190 ac. "St. Thomas" bought of James Hay, they to keep the name of Stourton. To: Parish Church at All Faith, silver tankard, to be used as sacramental ornament. Wife: Margery, Exec., and heirs, 300 ac. dwelling plantation, "The Parting Path" and 100 ac. "Hopewell" and residue of estate, real and personal. Overseers: Joseph Edwards, Capt. Thomas Truman Greenfield. Wit.: Charles Smith, Cosmos Parsons, Robert Scott. (2 and 3) They had a son named Jesse, who was born in St. Mary’s County in 1755, and died 9 Nov 1815. He married Sarah Bruce, NOT Sarah Bruce Reeder! Jesse was a surveyor in SMC in 1777. Agree that Jesse Locke was the son of Meverell Locke and Elizabeth Edwards and that he was a surveyor. His wife was Sarah Bruce, daughter of William Bruce and Elizabeth Reeder. (4) Meverell Locke devised his estate as follows: Will of Meverell Locke, SMC, 4/20/1764-5/5/1764. Son: Meverell, two tracts I bought of Stourton Edwards called "St. Thomas with Addition", 455 ac. and "Doe Park", 69 ac.; a sow and shoats. Wife: Elizabeth, "Hulston" 100 ac., "Truman's Lodge", 150 ac.; "Part of Keech and Price Rest", 58 ac.; "Part of John Edwards' Discovery", 165 ac.; "Truman" and "Truman's Hunting Quarter" 200 ac. during her her life and at her decease to his sons, Jesse Locke, George Locke, and Thomas Locke. Remainder of estate to my six children: Jesse, George, Anne, Mary, Elizabeth, and Thomas. Wit: John Edwards, John Locke, Thomas Dent. (Maryland Calendar of Wills). (5) I'm not sure what land Jesse actually received from his father's estate, but below is what he owned at various times. He was a surveyor and he did buy other properties from time to time. 1775 Lock, Jesse Locks Meadow 27 Patent Record BC and GS 49, p. 259 1787 Lock, Jesse Kellys Luck 138 Alienations and Transfers Resurrection 1788 Lock, Jesse Luck and Fortune 223 Unpatented Certificate 286 1788 Lock, Jesse Kellys Fortune 210 Alienations and Transfers Resurrection 1792 Lock, Jesse Luck and Fortune 233 Patent Record IC G, p. 161 1796 Lock, Jesse Long Looked for Come at Last 300 Alienations and Transfers Resurrection 1796 Lock, Jesse Long Looked for Come at Last 300 Alienations and Transfers Resurrection 1797 Lock, Jesse Mill Alienations and Transfers 1797 Lock, Jesse Millseat Alienations and Transfers 1797 Lock, Jesse Little Yielding Addition 19 Patent Record IC M, p. 313 New Town (6) Sarah Hulse is shown owning "Truman's Lodge", 200 ac. in Resurrection 100 in 1707 which was patented by Nathaniel Truman in 1676 (Chr. of SM). Don't know where Pearle? is coming from and I'm not sure if she was the widow of Meverell Hulse or not. (7) Westfield was Reeder property. Susanna Reeder, daughter of John Reeder and Dicandia Smith (she was an only child) m. first, John Ireland and second, Gustavus Brown. She was the granddaughter of Thomas Reeder and Susanna (Jordan?). 7/3/1814: ST. MARY'S COUNTY COURT (Land Records) A 1, 1777-1827, MSA CE 121-1, book A-1 (page 194-196 ) (My abstract). At the request of Sylvestor J. Costigan the following deed from Jesse Lock, Sarah Lock, and Susanna Suit to Susanna Brown is recorded under and by virtue of an act recorded under the Gen'l Assembly act of 1831. Indenture made 7/3/1814 Jesse Lock, Sarah Lock, and Susanna Suit for the sum of $1135.87 sell to Susanna Brown a parcel of land "Westfield Middle Ground" with addition, beg. at a Chestnut stump the original beginning of Westfield and also the beginning of "Summersets Addition" running various directions until the boundary of "Bogus Increase" then NE to the line of "Workington Park" containing 349-1/2 acres. Deed re recorded 2/14/1860. (From Tom Jennings). Susanna Suite was born Susanna Reeder and she was one of the grandchildren of Thomas Reeder and Susanna (Jordan?). She m. Thomas Suite bef. 1789. She is another one of the heirs selling off the land. (12) Jesse and Sarah had three children: William Bruce Lock, who married Mary Smith in 1810, (He died 25 Mar 1834 in SMC), Elizabeth Lock, who married Bennett Briscoe, and Susanna Lock, who married James Reeder (The nasty divorce you sent me). Basically agree, with corrections below. William Bruce Locke m. Sarah Mary Smith, daughter of Charles Somerset Smith III and Ann Sothoron. Elizabeth Locke m. Bennet Biscoe, not Bennet Briscoe. Susanna Reeder m. her cousin, James Reeder (I believe he was a brother of Susanna Reeder who m. Thomas Suite). (13) Peter O’Neale appears to be the uncle of Ann O’Neale Lock. She married Philip Lock, son of Philip and Mary Hulse Lock. He was the brother of Meverall Lock, and Uncle to Jesse Lock. This is all news to me, I'd have to have more information. Also, the last time you sent me information from this group, they really didn't have documentation that they were, in fact, descended from the Lockes of St. Mary's County. Did they offer anything else? They recently had their annual family reunion and I was unable to attend, but he sent me this information to try clear some things up. I have several questions about it: A. Who or what was "Westfield" in the information below and how does it connect to Suit? *My Suit/Suite family owned "Price's Rest" until before the Civil War when it was sold at a constable's sale to a Hezekiah Burroughs. How did my family come to own it? B. Who was Susannah Brown? Thanks. B. Treon bonnietreon@hotmail.com ----------------------------------- Here is what Vann sent me: 1.. Meverall (Merwell) Hulse, father of Mary Hulse Lock, had a son named Meverall, who married Elizabeth Edwards, daughter of Joseph Edwards and Mary Stouton (Stourton). 2.. They had a son named Jesse, who was born in St. Mary’s County in 1755, and died 9 Nov 1815. He married Sarah Bruce, NOT Sarah Bruce Reeder! 3.. Jesse was a surveyor in SMC in 1777. 4.. In 1815 when Jesse died, his land was divided in several ways; He had inherited a large piece of land in SMC from his father’s will in May, 1764. He was only nine at the time, but the land went to him when his mother died in October, 1784. He received portions of the following tracts: 1.. Heelstone- 100 acres 2.. Truman’s Lodge- 150 acres 3.. Keath and Price’s Rest- 58 acres 4.. John Edwards Discovery 5.. Truman- 165 acres 6.. Truman’s Hunting Quarter- 200 acres 5.. All of this land was divided equally among Jesse, George, and Thomas Lock. 6.. The property, Truman’s Lodge, was originally noted in the 1707 SMC tithable list as being possessed by Sarah Pearle Hulse, wife of Meverall Hulse, and great-grandmother to Jesse. 7.. Jesse and Sarah sold land to Susanna Brown, April 12, 1815, six months before he died. The “Suit” name was somehow associated with the Westfield name in this sale. The size of the tract was 349 ½ acres, and the deed was found in Folio 190. The name of the lan d was “Middle Ground with an addition and strap”. 8.. On June 28, 1801 (Folio 76) Jesse deeded “Little Yielding with addition” to Elizabeth Cartwright. It was 19 ½ acres. 9.. Jesse deeded “Long Look for Come at Last”, to Thomas R. Stephens on August 5, 1807, Folio 122, 4 ¾ acres. 10.. From 1801-1812, Jesse owned “Little Worth” with a mill, 46 ¾ acres. 11.. After his death, Sarah Lock deeded to William Bruce on June 10, 1817 (Folio 209) a number of plots of land. 12.. Jesse and Sarah had three children: William Bruce Lock, who married Mary Smith in 1810, (He died 25 Mar 1834 in SMC), Elizabeth Lock, who married Bennett Briscoe, and Susanna Lock, who married James Reeder (The nasty divorce you sent me) 13.. Peter O’Neale appears to be the uncle of Ann O’Neale Lock. She married Philip Lock, son of Philip and Mary Hulse Lock. He was the brother of Meverall Lock, and Uncle to Jesse Lock. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ See how Windows® connects the people, information, and fun that are part of your life Click here ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to MDSTMARY-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- No virus found in this incoming message.
