You're absolutely correct. Wm. Brereton and Wm. Bretton do not seem to be the same person. I had quoted Robert Maitland Brereton's book Breretons of Cheshire of one who "settled in Md in 1637 with wife, l child, and 3 servants. He was granted 750 acres in St. Mary's Co., was a burgess in 1649, and gave land to a church on St. Clement's bay in 1661. Breton's Bay and Britton, MD (noted on a 1692 map) mark the locality of the estate." Fortunately, several people were able to correct this error. Unfortunately, it does not help you with identifying ancestors of your Wm. Bretton. If I receive any information re: the Brettons I will forward it to you. Thank you again for your response.
