    1. Re: [MDSTMARY] John (John Roger?) Clark, St. Mary's Co, MD
    2. Thank you for your thoughts. I have been trying for years to find documentation showing the connection with the Lee/Clarke line. I am aware that Dorothy Cissell's was a Leigh. It becomes more complex when my great grandmother told her children and grandchildren that " her mother when visiting her Lee cousins, would attend school at Arlington House with her cousins", or when My great-grandmother and her sisters told their familes they were RE Lee's 4th cousin. We also have been shown the grave site at Arlington Cemetery by my great grandmother and one of her daughters where Alice Lee Clarke was buried while she was visiting her Lee cousins. There are just to many told stories for them all to be false. I do not believe these are fallacies, but truth. It does bother me that you would say that someone just read a book on the Lee family and that is where we got the Lee name. I am aware of the Lee history/Blenheim, and have researched that extensively as well as the facts according to the Lee Society that Alice Lee and Thomas Clarke did have a daughter named Alice Lee Clarke. We continue to look for documentation supporting this family connection. Therese DeSanto In a message dated 2/7/2009 12:40:05 P.M. Remember that when this research was done by older family members when there wasn't that much information readily available. Also, the memory can certainly trick you. For instance, you state they said that "The written notes from the 1920's say that John Clarke's father John Roger Clarke Sr. and was married to Alice Lee Clarke, daughter of Thomas Clarke and Alice Lee (Lee Family)." I think that somebody read a genealogy of the Lee family and decided this must be their person. Alice Lee, daughter of Philip Lee and Letitia Corbin did marry a man named Thomas Clark, but these folks were nowhere near St. Mary's County--as close as they got was "Blenheim" in Charles County. Whoever this Thomas Clark was, he was dead by 1760 when Alice married second, Meriwether Smith of Essex Co., VA and there's no indication that Alice had any children by Thomas Clark. Remember that Dorothy Cissell's mother was Dorothy Leigh (sounds like Lee, but not the same). Then we have the name John Roger Clarke. I have never found this man with a middle name. I have seen his name as John Clarke, Jr. but that doesn't mean he was the son of John--he could have been a younger John Clarke living in the same neighborhood and was called Jr. to keep the two separate in the minds of their neighbors. It's up to you now to separate the fact from the fiction and you can only do that with documentation.
