The MEDCALF/METCALF researchers might appreciate having it, if they don't already. With that in mind I have typed it out below for sharing. Enjoy! Sincerely, Elizabeth McIvor Copied from the Virginia Genealogical Society Quarterly, Volume 2, Number 3: John METCALFE 1 John METCALFE was born August 20, 1791 in Bourbon county Kentucky. His father was John METCALFE, born in Virginia, and his mother was Amelia Schackelford, also born in Virigina. They migrated to Kentucky directly after the Revolution. JOhn METCALFE lived in Kentucky and Missouri before moving to Texas, in 1849. With his brothers he owned "Mill Springs", a valuable manufacturing center near Monticello, Kentucky, consisting of ten different plants. HIs memory deserves to live as he gave the best years of his life in defense of his country, serving in the Great Lakes Campaigns and later with Jackson at New Orleans. One incident relevant to his service stands out. Jackson drew up his men and called for volunteers to lead a "Forlone Hope". After a moment of intense silence, John METCALFE stepped forward, asking only that Captain Matthews of Natchez, Mississippi accompany him. His mission was to locate Pakenham at the mouth of the Mississippi River. For many miles their journey lay through the swamps; slush up to their necks in places; they were lost and the only food for several days was crow meat. They were fortunate enough to get through and make their report and Jackson never forgot the service. John METCALFE married Francis Norton BAYLOR, daughter of Captain Walker BAYLOR. He died at Brenham, Texas in 1870. 1 Baylor's Quarterly, Volume 1, Number 2, April 1930, p.24. ----- Original Message ----- From: EPERRY4616@aol.com To: MDSTMARY-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Wednesday, February 4, 2009 7:30:05 AM GMT -06:00 US/Canada Central Subject: [MDSTMARY] JOHN MEDCALF & WILLIAM METCALF born bef 1764 - BEECH FORK, KY Rick --Thanks for sending the full citation on William Metcalf [below]. Here's a citation for JOHN MEDCALF, whom I believe also had land near BEECH FORK as well. Let me try to prove it. STEP ONE: Look at the citations below telling us that John Medcalf's land joined Gabriel May... where 1) it says he lives near Medcalf, and 2) the second citation tell us exactly where that land is located.... on Freman's creek a branch of BEECH FORK. STEP TWO: Look at Humphrey May's land which joins Gabriel May's and it states again that it's on BEECH FORK. In other words, we have a WILLIAM METCALF and a JOHN MEDCALF on/near BEECH FORK around 1785. Both of these men would have been born before 1764 to be eligible to buy land. Here are the citations referenced above: Henry, William. Publication 14 June 1786. Location: Fayette county (Ky.). Description: 1080 acres on a small creek waters of Main Licking adjoining JOHN MEDCALF . Source: Land Office Grants Z, 1785-1786, p. 492 (Reel 66). May, Gabriel. Publication 20 January 1792. Location: Bourbon County (Ky.). Description: 733 acres on the waters of the north fork of Licking and adjoining MEDCALF'S survey. Source: Land Office Grants No. 25, 1791-1792, p. 459 (Reel 91). May, Gabriel. Publication 22 May 1790. Location: Nelson County (Ky.). Description: 400 acres on Fremans Creek a branch of the BEECH FORK adjoining Wilsons Preemption. Source: Land Office Grants No. 22, 1789-1791, p. 202 (Reel 88). May, Humphrey. Publication 21 May 1790. Note Location: Nelson County. Description: 350 acres on Fremans Creek a branch of the BEECH FORK adjoining Gabriel Mays survey. Source: Land Office Grants No. 22, 1789-1791, p. 201 (Reel 88). If we have a WILLIAM METCALF and a JOHN MEDCALF, both born before 1765 near BEECH FORK KY about 1785, what does that tell us? Did they travel with William Coomes from Hampshire County, where Francis Coomes and Thomas Wharton lived? Ancestors defined by Manuscript by John Francis Metcalf, b 1825 Great-grandfather -- [Unstated] Medcalf moved to Fort Boon [from MD to VA to KY] Grandfather -- -- -- Ignatius Medcalf, Sr. & Nancy Ann [Unknown], just married* Father -- -- -- -- Ignatius Medcalf Jr. born Ft. Boon & Agnes [Agatha] Catherine Hough* Author -- -- -- -- John Francis Metcalf, b 1825 *Agnes/Agatha Catherine Hough, daughter of Nancy Ann Coomes, d/o William Coomes. Nancy Ann Coomes was 18 years old when the fort was sieged [1788]; see Buchanan's deposition below. Here's what the manuscript of Joseph Francis Metcalf, b 1825, tells us: "It is a settled fact that, the Metcalf that migrated from Virginia to Kentucky, with Daniel Boon in 1782 was my great great grandfather, and helped to build Fort Boon and the town of Harrodsburg, that one of his sons, Ignatius Metcalf, whick [sic] would be my great grandfather, moved to Bardstown Kentucky, he was one of five or seven children in his family. "Ignatius Metcalf [sic] parents emigiated [sic] from Maryland with Daniel Boon to Kentucky, when just married, and helped to build Fort Boon, where the present town of Harrodsburg, Mercer County, Kentucky, now stands." The author is talking about Ignatius Metcalf, Sr. coming to Kentucky with his parents... and that he was just married [to Mary Ann [Unknown]]. So Ignatius Sr. and Mary Ann were married either in Hampshire Co., VA or in Maryland. The author goes on to say that Ignatius Metcalf was probably born at Fort Boon [meaning Ignatius Jr.] Compare the Medcalf's migrated from Maryland to Virginia to Kentucky with that of the Coomes: Francis Coomes & Thomas Wharton moved from Maryland to Hampshire County VA and then William Coomes moved to Kentucky, is that not the same route at the same time? *PETITIONS OF THE EARLY INHABITANTS OF KENTUCKY Petition #7: <snip> Captain William Buchanan gave deposition [Williamsburg, 28 Nov 1788] that Fort _Boon_ (http://www.tiscali.ancestry.co.uk/facts/boon-family-history.ashx) had been attacked by a party of Indian, about 340 and there were only 60 men in the fort including the garrison soldiers, settler. Claim was rejected. Ernie In a message dated 2/3/2009 6:56:03 P.M.
