My problem is, how do we know it was John Johnson of David? That's why I haven't assigned this marriage to him. I had two children assigned to John Johnson of David (Joseph and Charles), both I had born prior to 1800, but after going over the records this morning again, I have decided they were Clarissa Walker's sons and born later than I originally supposed. 11/12/1841: Deed from John Johnson of David for natural love and affection to my three sons Charles, Henry, and Joseph Johnson all my negroes, horses, cattle, and stock of every description, bills, bonds, securities, and other evidences of debt, farming utensils, crops on hand at the time of my death, all household and kitchen furniture and every other description of property whether, real, personal, or mixed except one negro girl named Louisa, 2 beds and furniture which I give to my grandchildren George Alexander Yates and Ally Maria Yates, and $100 I give to my grandchild, Elizabeth Johnson to be held by my son Charles and by him paid over to her as she may be in want of it. I also reserve the bed and furniture which I use from the above mentioned property. Wit.: George W. Gibson. Recorded 11/12/1841. (St. Mary's County Deeds, JH 12, 259). Just three days after executing the above deed, John Johnson m. Elizabeth Drury. Will of Charles Johnson, SMC, 5/12/1845-6/10/1845. Nephew: George Alexander Yates, $100. Niece: Ally Maria Yates, $100. Niece: Elizabeth Johnson, $100. To: St. Joseph's and Newtown Churches, $25 each. Brother: Joseph Johnson, a note of hand of $200 and another one of $30. The residue of my property including all of my right, title, and claim to the property conveyed to me by bill of sale from my father as well as any property that may be left to me by my father at his death is to be equally divided between my brother, Joseph Johnson (one half) and the children of my brother, Henry Johnson (one half). Exec.: Brother, Joseph Johnson. Wit.: George W. Gibson, Charles Nevitt. NOTE: Henry Johnson, a brother of the deceased, did not object to the probate of this will. (St. Mary's County, Maryland Wills, 1836-1857 by Linda Reno). This is the will of John Johnson (of David) who made a will despite the deed above. Will of John Johnson (of David), SMC, 4/23/1850-10/12/1852. Wife: Elizabeth Johnson, one bed, bedstead, and furniture. She is to also have all of the beds, bedding, and furniture that she has made or purchased since the time of our marriage and $440. Exec.: Wife, Elizabeth Johnson. Wit.: John F. Dent, Albert Burch. NOTE: Joseph Johnson and Henry Johnson, two of the sons of the deceased, did not object to the probate of this will. (St. Mary's County, Maryland Wills, 1836-1857 by Linda Reno). Henry Johnson died in 1853. He was the only one of the three sons to leave issue, although there may have been another son who was the father of Elizabeth Johnson. Right now, I have Elizabeth under Henry Johnson, but it's probably wrong. Joseph Johnson (who I knew from these documents was still living as late as 1852) died in 1871. His wife, Ruth Ann Alvey, had died in May 1871. He had no living children at the time of his death. Will of Joseph Johnson, St. Mary's Co., 9/11/1871-12/7/1871; Legacies to George F. Tennison, Ann Shercliffe Tennison Bailey, John J. Bailey, William T. Bailey, Mrs. Mary E. Mattingly's heirs, Mrs. Ann C. Hutchinson's heirs, and to William F. Leach. (Transcribed by Linda Reno). The legatees named above are his relations via his mother, Clarissa Walker who had been married first to Francis Xavier Shercliffe. So--bottom line, I'm not convinced that John Johnson (of David) was married more than twice. First to Clarissa (Walker) Shercliffe and second, to Elizabeth Drury. Revised report follows.
