    1. [MDSTMARY] St. Mary's County Historical Society
    2. Linda Reno
    3. Scott Lawrence, Editor of "The Chronicles" told me last night that the Society will soon begin making the copies of this quarterly publication available to members (who choose to do so) via email in PDF format. "The Chronicles" has a treasure trove of information available to the researcher. You can find information here that you cannot find elsewhere and it covers the earliest days of the colony to more current times. I have all of the Chronicles dating back to the beginning in 1953. As a member of the Society, you receive "The Chronicles" free and you can join for as little as $35 per year. I strongly urge you to join--I'm sure you won't be disappointed. Other membership perks include a bit of free research, queries, and discounts at the bookstore. Even though you may not live in the area and probably wouldn't be able to visit the Research Center there's still plenty for you. To keep our history alive, we need to support those that make it available to us. This includes not only the Historical Society but the Genealogical Society as well (David Roberts has already filled you in several times as to how to join that group). The information is below from their web page: http://home.md.metrocast.net/~smchs/ Membership Over the past few years, we have made great strides in our efforts to improve the value of your membership in the Historical Society. 3. Linda is totally correct. Everyone with an interest in St. Mary's County history &/or genealogy ought to be a member of the St. Mary's County Historical Society. Even if you never get to Leonardtown & never visit the place, your dues are helping preserve the history of this important "settlement gateway." You will benefit from the "Chronicles" - really an excellent publication on local history. But more importantly, you will benefit from knowing you have helped to preserve the history & records of St. Mary's. Of course, while you have your checkbook out & are writing the HISTORICAL Society a membership check, write out a second and join the GENEALOGICAL Society! :o) You ought to be a member of both - both groups are working in parallel - NOT conflicting- channels for the same purpose. Linda, thanks for posting this.
