Please be very careful of the facts in Anna Hamilton's book. I went to her house in Whitesville and bought the book from her years ago, and wasted many years using the wrong information. Aloysius [Lawson] Howard (1815-1862) and Basil P. Howard (1801-1883) were the two sons of Charles Howard and Frances Ann "Panny" Thompson. I think Anna got the middle name "Pottinger" from a letter written May 19, 1945 from Patrick Allen Howard to Boone Cyrus Howard. I'm quoting just the relevant portion. "My Greatgrandfather, Charles Howard, and one brother went to Maryland and from there settled in Marion County, Kentucky. My grandfather, Basil Pottinger Howard, and a brother, Aloysius, came to Davis County, settled near Whitesville, and raised several children. Their descendants are quite numerous in this part of Davis County." I agree that John Baptist Howard and James Howard are probably brothers. My personal suspicion, for which I have absolutely no proof, is that they may be the sons of Henry (bef. 1724 - bef 24 Aug 1775) and Mary Howard of Newtown hundred, St. Mary's, Maryland. My main reasons are ages and tax records placing John Baptist and James in Newtown hundred, and names used in the families. The yDNA of a descendant of William Howard who married Ann Clarke (abt. 1771 MD Nov 1859 Nelson, KY) and the descendants of James Howard (abt 1758 SMC, MD - 802 Washington, KY) does not match. Although they are both haplogroup E1b1b the markers differ greatly. Only 11 of 6 markers tested so far matched. For those of you with an interest, the results of Howard DNA tests done by amilyTreeDNA can be seen at: http://www.familytreedna.com/public/howarddnaproject/default.aspx?section=yresults illiam Howard's descendant is test # 207496 James Howard's descendant is test # 81896 My brother's isn't on there because he tested with Ancestry. You'll notice on the results that another test did match the descendant of illiam Howard of Nelson County. This person's earliest known ancestor was illiam A Howard, born 3 March 1847 in Owen County, Kentucky. Anyone with any answers, or new theories? Basil Patrick HOWARD was a son of Charles HOWARD and Frances "Fanny" THOMPSON. If there was a Basil Pottinger Howard he was was not their son. This is what happens when you don't update your FamilyTree software to match your Ancestry tree. I had two George Howards confused for awhile. George W Howard was the son of John Baptist Howard. I don't know who the other George who married Polly Merrifield belongs to. These are the notes I have for George W. You'll note he moved to Daviess county, as did Charles (who I think was his cousin) and Charles' sons Basil and Aloysius. I've looked at tax lists, deeds, marriage records, his tombstone, etc. I think this was another guess on Anna Hamilton's part because he had a son named George Patrick, and a grandson Patrick Allen. Patrick Allen is the one who named his grandfather Basil Pottinger Howard. Until I see it on an actual record I'll just call my 3rd great-grandfather Basil P. I used the Frances "Fanny" name for the wife of Charles Howard myself until I saw the actual records on microfilm. Her name had appeared as Fanny in the Kington book. I went to her house n Whitesville and bought the book from her years ago, and wasted many years sing the wrong information. loysius [Lawson] Howard (1815-1862) and Basil P. Howard (1801-1883) were the wo sons of Charles Howard and Frances Ann "Panny" Thompson. I think Anna got he middle name "Pottinger" from a letter written May 19, 1945 from Patrick llen Howard to Boone Cyrus Howard. I'm quoting just the relevant portion. "My Greatgrandfather, Charles Howard, and one brother went to Maryland and from here settled in Marion County, Kentucky. My grandfather, Basil Pottinger oward, and a brother, Aloysius, came to Davis County, settled near Whitesville, nd raised several children. Their descendants are quite numerous in this part f Davis County." I agree that John Baptist Howard and James Howard are probably brothers. My ersonal suspicion, for which I have absolutely no proof, is that they may be he sons of Henry (bef. 1724 - bef 24 Aug 1775) and Mary Howard of Newtown undred, St. Mary's, Maryland. My main reasons are ages and tax records placing ohn Baptist and James in Newtown hundred, and names used in the families.
