    1. [MDSTMARY] Payne Genealogy
    2. I descend from grandparents John Payne of Red House known as the 1st generation of The Paynes of Virginia by Brooke Payne and his wife Martha Robinson/Jennings and also Martha Eltonhead that married Edwin Conway, Sr. Patrick Payne is my source and has shared his work with many of us through routine genealogy research and DNA testing. His conclusions are as follows that he has shared with us in the past . The last I have saw was in 2004. : New Evidence that John Payne (ca 1615-1689/90) of Westmoreland Co., Va descended from the Huntingdonshire Payne Family. Robert Payne, Salter and Citizen of London, in his will of 1622 mentions his brother Florentine Payne. Also his nephew's son, John Withers. John Withers is closely associated with my grandfather John Payne of Red House. John Payne had close ties to the Lee's of Virginia. Richard Lee I was in partnership with Florentine Payne who was a Burgess in Elizabeth City, Va. The John & Dorothy in 1635 sailed from London to Va, John Payne of Red House as Commannder. He had transported goods to Adam and Sir John Thourogood, guardian of Anne Constable. She became the wife of Florentine Payne, a business partner of Richard Lee I. John Payne of the John & Dorothy was also known as a partner of the brothers Joseph and Nathaniel Hawes of London. Their brother-in-law was Capt. George Payne who married Rachel Hawes. George was also a partner of the Hawes brothers and ended up bailing John Payne out of his 1635 voyage by buying the ship so John could pay the crews wages. There is a will 1662/3 of George Payne of London that mentions his cousins , Robert and John Payne of St. Noets, Huntingdonshre, England. On 20 Feb 1662, two years before the death of Richard Lee I, John Paine , patented 88 acres along Dividing Creek , and on 1 June 1664 , he patented 406 acres in Northumnbeland Co., Va, bordering Richard Lee I. John Payne was the father of William Payne who married (2nd) to Elizabeth Pope and in his will 31 Jan 1697/8 appointed Richard Lee guardian to my children. This was Richard Lee II. Now enters the Eltonhead's. Richard Lee II married Lettice, dau of Henry Corbin and Alice Eltonhead (sister to my grandmother Martha Eltonhead) These lines in England leads from the Corbins to Sir John Paultney. The Paultney's were cousins of the Suffolk Payne family to which William Payne died 1660 of Boston belonged. That leads to Col. John Washington and the Pope's and the Gerard's. Our Eltonhead line has Gerard grandparents in England with descendants coming to Maryland. Alice Eltonhead, kin to William Eltonhead that died 1655 offer some paths to the Sufolk Paynes in England. Before moving to moving to St. Mary's Co., Md. the Eltonhead's had lived on Virginia's Eastern shore in Northanpton Co., Va where Col. Edmund Scarburgh stood as security for the personal appearance of William Eltonhead at court . William failed to appear and Col. Scarburgh paid 909 lbs of tobacco. On 22 July 1653, William Eltonhead witnessed an indenture between Argol Yeardley (Adam Thouogood's father-inlaw).. The Suffolk Payne's have connections here. There is so much more but the will of Robert Payne, the Salter, in 1622 names Florentine Payne, my brother, John Withers, my sister's son, William Paine, my brother's son, brother Thomas and his son John, cosen Agnes Thourogood, brother Thomas, George Payne, John, , my mother-in-law Anne Payne, etc. Credit given to Chuck Owens a John Payne descendant from Virginia: " There is a possibility that John Payne was descended from or was connected to The Hampshire Payne family since Robert Payne the Salter mentioned in his 1622 will, the town of Basingstoke which is in county Hampshire and left a considerable sum to that town. he also mentioned his brother Florentine Payne which is associated with that family. There could be a connection between St. Noet's , Huntingdonshire since it was 100 miles north, perhaps there was a connection between the Hampshire and Huntingdonshire families. Florentine Payne had connections with the Lee family in Virginia just as John Payne of Virginia did." A lot of connections here to think about. Marianne Dillow Illinois

    3. Hello, Marianne, I've seen your posts to St. Mary's Co. and have long ago been in touch with Patrick Payne. Would you have a pedigree of the Paynes of Suffolk? I am interested in the Thomas Payne family and the Henry Payne family. Thomas below: I'm writing a book on the Drurys who seem to have a Payne connection in St. Mary's Co. I'd be interested in anything you might know about them too. Edmund Scarborough is connected too. Mary Ford who married our *John Drury* had been previously married to Jonathon Seale and he was the one who died by 1714. If Rachel was married to DRURY it would have been before 11 January 1716/17, when ... So if *John Drury* was married to Rachel Payne it would have to have been between 1695 and about 1704. This IS possible but then what do we do about her marriage to John Kerse?
