Payne, we finally found two that match. The closest matches to our DNA are descendants of Henry Payne and Mary Assister in St. Mary's County, Maryland. Bennett D. Payne (middle name may be Dixon according to family tradition) was born sometime around 1775-1780. At this point we do not know where he was born. The first record we have of him is his marriage in 1801 in Culpeper County, Virginia to Mary 'Polly' McKensey (McKenzie). In 1809 he followed his brothers (George & John) and sister (Charlotte Payne Jackson) to Madison, and then Jefferson County, Kentucky where he died in 1826. There are many researchers on the internet who have George Henry Payne and Elizabeth Johnson as his parents. As far as we know this is only family tradition and we have not seen any proof. Bennett's second son was named Henry Johnson Payne, so it is possible that this family tradition is correct, but we very much would like to find proof. Can anyone out there help us connect our Bennett D. Payne to any of the descendants of Henry Payne and Mary Assister? Any help would be very much appreciated.
