    1. [MDSTMARY] Sheriff's History
    2. Linda Reno
    3. Hello everyone, I'm currently working on a project for the St. Mary's County Sheriff's office in developing a history of that office from 1637 to the present. Several men ended up (or were already in) what would eventually become Charles County. That would include William Boarman, Joshua Doyne and several others. If you have any information or stories on Sheriffs and would be willing to share, I'd love to have it. Also, we're looking for portraits and/or pictures, diaries, any memorabilia. I do have a list of the Sheriffs if you'd like to have it. As you know, there are no attachments allowed on the lists, so contact me and I'll send. Thanks for any help! Linda Reno

    3. Richard Willan --St. Mary's County sheriff for a two year period, I believe, 1640's or 50's. I'd have to dig to find the original source I had---I just wanted to throw the name out there. 3. Hi Linda, I would like to obtain a copy of the Sheriff list. Below I append my take on my 8g's grandfather William Thompson, who is thought to have been an original Adventurer and Sheriff of St. Marys in 1648. You probably already have him on your list but perhaps there is some info below that will be useful. I could send it as a word document since the version below is poorly spaced on my computer. The price we pay for no attachments! Cheers, Pete According to Archives of Maryland, vol 4, p 379 he was appointed High Sheriff of St. Mary's County in April 1648 as "Mr. Willm Tompson" and subscribed to the oath accordingly. Deposed being 50 years old in 1647(Arch. IV:354).He and his wife Anne are in St. Mary's as early as 1641 and probably earlier, when they gave 500 acres of "Robert's Neck" to John Medley, who had married their daughter Elizabeth (Patents 1:119).In Jan. 1646 William proved rights to 250 acres for himself, wife, and 3 children, who were transported into the province in 1641 (Patents AB&H: 5). Although his arrival on the Ark is not proved and he is not on the first "official" list published by H. Richardson, Harry Wright Newman states in "The Flowering of the Maryland Palatinate"(TFOTMP), p262, that he believes William was an original Adventurer based on wills and land ownership. Perhaps he was a redemptioner of one of the Gentlemen of Fashion. No record has been found for his claiming land rights for either emigration, or service or any claiming rights for his transportation. He was not among those summoned to the General Assembly of 1637, perhaps not having completed his service but by March 1641/42 he gave his proxy to Thomas Green, Gent.Only free men could do this so this implies that by this time he had finished his service if indeed he had been indentured. At first he was seated in St. Michael's Hundred but later his dwelling plantation was in the New Towne Hundred. His last will dated 1/8/1649/50 left all to Anne his wife. On 8/6/1641 land assigned by Lord Calvert was "adjoining land of William Thompson near Newtowne Marsh".In January 1646/47 he proved rights for 250 acres, 50 of which were for the service of his wife unnamed. Some libelous statements were transmitted to Lord Baltimore by persons unknown regarding his conduct during Ingle's Rebellion of 1645.The councilors and burgesses later disavowed them under oath and stated they were made out of "haatred and spleen' and the "your Honour hath not a more faithful and cordial friend in the whole Province". His will left all to Anne his wife without naming any children. There is confusion between the Newman and Donnelly accounts about William(1)'s wife Anne and whether she is the mother of his children, etc. Here is my current take.William(1) probably married Anne in England and had by her the three children, William(2), Elizabeth and Andrew. It seems very likely that Elizabeth and William(2) were born in England before their father left on the Ark and Dove Adventure and that Anne and the children did not leave with him but were later transported to Maryland as servants in the late 1630's or early 40's.Elizabeth was probably born after or about 1619, since she married John Medley at Newport, St. Mary's County in 1642. John Medley was transported in 1635 and allegedly left behind a young wife, who I'm guessing died in England at an early age. William(2) was probably born about 1623 and came to Maryland with his mother and siblings. He is likely to be the servant of John Jarboe mentioned in the Archives of Maryland, Vol. 3, p 282-3: p 287. I know nothing about William(1)'s son Andrew and he might have been born in England or in Maryland. Anne married William Evans soon after William(1) died in 1650.If she was about the same age as her 1st husband then she would be about 40 years old when she arrived in Maryland and this suggests that Andrew was more likely born in England before 1633. For descendants, see The "Maryland Semmes and Kindred Families", by H.W. Newman. Mary Louise Donnelly's "Colonial Settlers; St. Clement's Bay 1634-1780", 1996 concludes differences with Newman but I do not often trust things she reports.
