Gayle, I know you have done extensive research on the early Howards of Nelson and Washington Cos., KY By any chance have you figured out who might be the father of William Howard m bef 1792 Anne Clarke, dau of Joseph Clarke, (Will Aug 6, 1796, pro 9 May 1797, Nelson Co. KY) ? He is one... of my blank walls. In the book "Passing Generations 1885-1903", p 17, by Carolyn Wimp, is the following: "Thursday , Nov 4, 1886 Betsy Boon of Near "Atherton ville, died on the 20th of old age. She was born on Hardin's Creek, which is now in Marion Co., in 1792. Her FATHER WAS J. W. HOWARD, who was on of the first settler of KY. She was born shortly after her parents arrived from Maryland. In 1815 she married John Boone, a relative of Daniel Boone{totally incorrect,my comment} who died 10 to 12 years ago. She was 94 year old" The above is an abstract of deaths that were found in THE LARUE COUNTY HERALD newspapers from 1885 to 1930. found on microfilm in the LaRue Co. Library in Hodgenville, KY. After all of the above.. the bit about Daniel Boon is totally incorrect. John Boone was the son of Walter Boone of Charles Boon of Pr George's Co. MD. NELSON CO. KY CEMETERIES VOL. I, p 91s Boon, Elizabeth Howard b 14 June 1797, d 20 Oct 1886 age 89 years Boon, John b 1780 d: 15June 1874 age 91 years. They married in 1817. In the above account her death date 1886, Oct 20 is correct. the statement that John Boon died 10-12 years ago is also correct Daniel Boon totally incorrect. her birth is incorrect according to the cemetery records.. her marriage date was 1817 instead of 1815 There were family still living in 1886 who should have known the family history etc.?????. My question FINALLY is what do we make of the statement "Her father was J. W. Howard one of the lst settlers of KY" William Howard does not show up on the tax or tithable lists of Nelson Co. VA (KY) or of Nelson/Washington Cos. KY until 1797 when he and his brothers-in laws all appear for the first time on the tax lists. . What do you think about the father being J. W. Howard? I have never found anything that pertained to William Howard other then just Wm?? The Wm Howards 1800-1820 can be separated to the correct families.. Just not my William Howard. Joseph Clark just never appears on the tax list due to old age. All were probably in the Nelson co. area by 1796, as Joseph Clark's will is dated Aug 1796. Sorry know you know most of the above but wanted to put all in writing etc.. John Boone and Elizabeth (Betsy) Howard are my ancestors) Appreciate any comments or ideas. I’m afraid I don’t know the father of William Howard (born about 1771 St. Mary’s, MD – died Nov 1859 New Haven, Nelson, KY). There are hints that he was related to the Edward Howard who led one group of Maryland Catholics to Kentucky. He and Ann Clarke had children: 1. Edmund/Edward Howard (abt 1795-aft 1820) m. Delphia Davis d/o Joshua Davis on 13 Feb 1816 Washington, KY (Kington & Sanders). Her 2nd m. William Catlin 2. Elizabeth “Betsy” Ann Howard (14 Jun 1797-20 Oct 1886) m. 13 Jan 1817 Washington, KY, Johnny Boone (1788-1874) s/o Walter “Watty” Boone & Margaret Mildred “Peggy” Edelen 3. Joseph Edward Howard (18 Mar 1799 – 11 Mar 1879) 1m. 7 Aug 1821 Washington, KY, Mariah “Mary” Elizabeth Pike (1807-1825), 2m. 5 Aug 1826 Nelson, KY, Elizabeth “Betsy” Greenwell 4. Sarah Howard (26 Sep 1801 – 1 Sep 1884) m. 8 Jun 1819 Washington, KY, Joseph Pike 5. Hillary Howard (1806-5 Jul 1851) m. 11 Jan 1827 Nelson, KY, Judith Tennill 6. Susan Howard (abt 1812 – 1880) m. 22 Dec 1838 Daviess, KY, Dennis Davis Coomes William Howard signed as a witness for the note of consent from an Edward Howard for his daughter Susannah Howard to wed Charles Boon (another son of Walter “Watty” Boon & Peggy Edelen) 23 Jan 1812 in Springfield, Nelson, KY. William Howard was bondsman for this marriage with Charles Boon. I’m pretty sure that William Howard was the brother of James Howard of Hardin’s Creek (26 Jan 1767 St. Mary’s, MD – 26 Aug 1856 Marion, KY). James Howard’s son by Sarah Brewer Mattingly was Edward Joseph Howard (1817-1891). We also have the letter from Boone Cyrus Howard (1865-1957), son of Austin, son of Joseph Edward (#3 above) that states they were brothers. I speculate (just a conjecture – no proof at all!) that they were sons of Edward Howard, and brother of the Thomas Howard who left his land to the Church in his 1810 will. Perhaps the Edward Howard from Springfield was another brother. I do think that they were cousins of some type to my James Howard of Prather’s Creek in Washington, KY, but until a male Howard of this line takes a DNA test it is also still a guess.
